Hi Keith,

 

The only rusty sills I Have ever had were on an Austin A40 in 1969.  Replacing the is the best option.

 

When I replaced them on the A40 I was working in the Steel Industry, and I measured the profile and had two made for me in the warehouse workshop.   I used galvanised steel with plastic coating on the incised, took off the old ones and pop riveted them into place.

 

I don't think that would be possible nowadays, although I still think a replacement done by a good body shop would be ideal.

I have seen posts on another forum that when members have removed the sill covers they have had a bit of a shock,

to find rusty sills.

I have just sprayed mine with Built Hamber,but i did not remove the sill covers just sprayed inside.

I suppose because they are hidden behind the covers they get forgotten.

Also sprayed the front offside of the subframe as i noticed some surface corrosion.

found out how to remove n/s sill cover today- pleasantly surprised to find very little corrosion - next time o/s then waxoil .

Just had my local garage check mine, just for piece of mind !!!!!!!! glad I did, N/S was fine, Drivers side had to have inner AND outer sills replaced.

I am gonna waxoil them both now.

Had an XR3i (in my youth) and waxoiled extensively. Had it many years and nil rust. Now have a 56 Reg S-Type and would like to keep it so it looks as if I had better pull my finger out and apply waxoil to it also; and soon.  However, I'm not that knowledgeable about the Jags and there doesn't seem to be a Haynes manual for the S type.  Anybody know of any workshop manuals that will lead me through things like sill removal and refitting ? ...............

Hi Paul,

 

We had an XR3i - convertible in Bright Red, but we sold it after I retired as we only needed one car.

 

There are no Haynes manuals for the S Type but there are some specific manuals that you can download and can be found by googling around.

 

I do recall some members having done the job of sill removal and refitting without any great trouble. You are able to go back on the posts in the s type section of the site and pull out some useful information.

 

I don't get under the car any more  ---  it takes too long to get back up!

Hi --      My X Type as I said in a past post failed its test because of rusty sills [i didnt look at them when I bought it ]

but I never paid over the top for the car so I had them replaced cost about £500 it seems as I was told this is a fault

with some  not all x type up to the 2004--2005 a bad batch of sills or somethig like that ---The thing is you can't see

them very well because of the plastic cover sill so its worth a check you can get a srew-driver behind to find out.???

Is it just a case of removing the underside clips or is there anything else i need to know? Planning to check my sills in the spring and treat them if necessary.
