Hi Everyone,

i am now in the very lucky position nearing retirement(59) of being able to to recieve some cash from my pension and i thought the best way to spend some of it would be on a Jaguar.

I do like the S-Type,well more than like i feel it is a great car and it does bring a smile everytime i use it.

I have been looking at the XK8 which i have always liked its looks,and as before owning an xjs v12 it would be interesting to see how they compare.

The only restriction i have,apart from budget is that i want to put it in my garage,my trusted S-Type fits in a treat but not so sure about the XK8.

My S-Type is a 2004 3ltr Auto,petrol,are the later s-types all diesel,not keen on a diesel as i do not do the miles anymore and having experienced the DPF problems with my wife's Mazda i will not go down that route.

All comments welcome.

Hi Graham,

 

My neighbour has a Mazda 6 and when coming back from his house in France it always used to go into limp mode due to the DPF.  He had it removed!

 

The s type diesel more or less took over the market that the 2.5 litre petrol had, and became very popular, and personally, I do like it as it is a superb engine.

 

But there are still quite a few late models around , and in the USA both the 3 litre and the 4.2 litre R  are very popular cars.

 

There are quite a few late models around if you do a search online.

 

At the same time the XK8 is a very nice car, and if I was as young as you I might think about one myself.

Graham,

 

Get another Jag with your retirement pennies, it's better than wasting it . All the jags are fab, so you can't go far wrong!

thanks for the replies.

Trevor i agree it will be another Jag definitely,as you say they are all good,i have had many over the years and also have had

Mercedes and i always come back to the Jag.

Trevor is your XK garaged,is it in a single garage?

Peter thanks for the info i will have a look online,as if i had the space i would keep the s-type and get an xk.

My XKR is parked on the road as not many houses in North Devon have garages, just a post to tie their horses up to .

 

I would love another convertible, but it is not wise having one without a garage, as I found out to my cost with both the Aston Martin and the BMW .

 

Prefer the metal roof convertibles to the rag tops though.

Having bought this 3.0L S Type Sport and enjoying it tremendously, I must admit that my head is beginning to turn to the S Type R as my next motor. But then again Graham prices are beginning to come down on the XF range, perhaps an XFS, oooooo, you've got some thinking to do bud.

I was loaned XF's whilst the Aston was in the garage (which was frequent) including the 3 litre devil's fuel portfolio, an XF-R, and the XFR-S, all were cracking cars .

 

I do like the look of the old Jags though, but the new shape is growing on me.

 

Go and test drive an XF, you will be surprised just how good they are (or perhaps you already know).

thats made my choice even harder now :D .

Well its gotta be worth a look,but i am dictated to some extent on whether it will fit in the garage,then i suppose could move house

and get a double garage.

Hi Guys,

i may now have to change my mind and get a boat :( .

After the flash rain storm on Saturday my garage was flooded up to the sills of my s-type,but luckily for me

it did not enter the car,garage is now drying out,i was lucky as others had far worse.

I have looked at a few XK8's and i was surprised how badly a lot of them have been treated and people wanting loads of money for them.

Later in the week i am going to look a couple of XF's,but at the moment my trusted S-type is not leaving my side :D

Kevin,i agree i am very lucky,getting older has its positives i suppose,so i am having a good luck around.

Although a great car the XF is not for me.

I have now seen a few XK8's and not one has "tempted me to buy" as yet.

I have looked at Coupe's and Convertibles and each one has seperate advantages and disadvantages(like all cars).

The only car that i feel fits the bill for me is the S-Type,so going to look at the later petrol models.

In my opinion having looked at the different models the S-type is going to take some beating.

Picking up on Trevors point re metal convertibles,they do seem to give you the best of both worlds,oh dear but no jag

variant. :rolleyes:

I think that both the 3 litre and the 4.2 litre engines have their merits, although  the 4.2 litre might have take a bit of hammer from boy racers.  They are quite a rarity. A friend of mine has one but he never uses it in the winter as he says it is too expensive to run.

 

The 3 litre is a great engine and very popular in the USA in both the S Type and the X type.

 

A 2007 low mileage S Type with the 3 litre engine is still pretty quick and the SE model is well equipped.

Sounds like you've made your mind Graham, you're talking yourself round to a late model S Type, can't say I blame you. Mines an 2003 model and it drives like new, I'm well impressed with it. No disregard to the X Type, I've had 2 of them, but the S Type finish and ride just feels like a step up.

I absolutely adore mine, around town it's shocking on fuel but I live in the country and it averages 28 to the gallon, on a run to Leeds it did 35 so not too shabby.

 

Performance is definitely there if you want it, or it does a lovely line in waft if not.

its beginning to look that way,as currently for me it does tick the boxes,it would have been nice to have something newer as i think

the S-type finishes in 2007?

But i feel why spend a lot of money and not be satisfied(her indoors is so pleased.....she mentioned something about the

kitchen ^_^ ,i think she was going to wash up!)

My S-type is off to the bodyshop next week to get the rear corner dent fixed,they reckon it will take about 4 days.

Thanks for everone's help,much apreciated,so lets get on with the search, i will let you know how i get on.

I think the 57 plate was the last, Graham.  My 2.7D is on an 07 plate and with only about 150k sold in the UK there are not that many around as some other cars.

Hi there folks,

another week has passed by and a few cars have been looked at while my S was in the bodyshop and i must admit a great job was done.

I think i am on the home straight now having decided on 3 models of cars,not all Jags i am afraid but i have looked at how they look,interior comfort - looks,ease of servicing,i still like to dabble.

So we have the XK8 - Convertible/Coupe - Jaguar S Type - i will say this one quietly,Mercedes R129 SL Range pre 2001.

They all have their positives and negatives,where in my opinion the mercedes scores over the xk8 convertible is the hard/soft top

configuration.But the xk8 has a better looking interior and after all you do sit inside the car a lot!

The S Type is still tops in the all rounder category and my head says to have a newer version but my heart says "Convertible",

her indoors says "keep the one youv'e got! :rolleyes:
