Hello all

 

Just joined today.  I'd always fancied a Jag, especially as my brother has a wonderful XK8 convertible as his play car, and have always liked the look of the S type.  I always said as a kid that one day I'd own a Jag.

 

I had a 1997 SAAB 900 2.0 SE Turbo Convertible which was my joy as a play car but that started developing faults that were uneconomical for me to remedy, given the 2000-3000 miles a year I do in my play car.  I sold it last week and started looking around for a suitable replacement.  I was going to get another convertible but then saw a couple of S types going for silly low money so decided to look around for a cheap but decent spec one.

 

I found this car and paid just £600 for it.  A 2000 3.0 SE V6 Auto.  The body work is not perfect but for a 14 year old car it's pretty decent it currently has 110450 miles on it but has service history to 98,955 in 2012.  in 2013 the previous owner paid for a reconditioned auto box to be installed by a Jaguar & Aston Martin specialists and the invoices came to nearly £2,500 so I am hoping the engine and gearbox are spot on and driving it they certainly seem to be.  The leather is showing wear but no splits.  There are only very minor issues with it that I can sort or live with.  The rear passenger door central locking doesn't work, so have to lock/unlock from the inside.  The ashtray lid is broken and the 12V socket doesn't work (the thing that most irritates me and it's not just the fuse as I've checked) the glove box is broken so if opened the lid drops right down rather than being held half way.

 

The headlamps are discoloured but I believe that is simple enough to sort with lens cleaner.

 

Car returned 29.6mpg on the 100miles I've done in it so far so am reasonably content with that as it's been mixed town and A road driving.

 

I'm a bit of a mechanical/DIY numpty but if any of you have any top tips on keeping it running well I'd happily take experienced advice.

Sounds like you've got yourself a lot of car for little money, I've always fancied an S type, just the way they sit does it for me, kinda cool.

Sounds an excellent car and I hope all goes well, there seems to be some knowledgeable people on here that are only to willing to help .

 

I wouldn't put too much credence in the Jaguar/ Aston Martin (AKA junk) specialist though if they're anything like the stealership I used .

 

I do like the look of the S type,Peter has one and seems to know a lot about them and I'm sure can give you plenty of advice .

Hi Chris, and welcome to the club.

 

There are quite a few member who know a lot about the oily bits and will help with any problems.

 

I researched the S Type before I bought one - a late model with the 2.7 diesel with twin turbos.  I bought the diesel ar since I retired we only keep one car and we wanted a bit of economy as well as it bit os speed.

 

One of the things I did was have the Terraclean service which does a very good engine clean out and is work the £125 or so that it costs.  The other tip I have is to use to quality fuel rather than the cheap supermarket fuel, which is worth it both for economy and engine performance.

 

You will enjoy your s type, which in my opinion will become a future classic,

Hi Chris, Croeso (Welcome in English  ) I like the look of the S Type reminds me of the old Mk.2 which of course was a icon and it sounds as if you have a lot of car for the money what can you get for £600? wow.

 

If you have checked the fuse on the cig socket and its OK then check if there is voltage at the socket by using a voltage tester with positive probe at the socket and neg probe at a known good earth, if voltage is shown then use the neg probe at the socket. Its quite common on cig sockets to loos its earth

I should have been Welsh really. It was only by accident I was up north, my parents weren't living there, my mum was visiting her mother and I came along two months early , but returned to the valleys after 14 days .

 

The S type does look like the old Mark 2, or "a proper Jag" as the wife calls it , that's why she pestered me to get rid of the XJ Supersport, which was a brilliant car .
