HI all,

Just joined and will no doubt be looking for advice during the coming weeks and, dare I say it, years of Jag ownership.

I did have an old Sovereign about 15 years ago so not a total Jag newbie.

Hi Gerry,

Don't get me going on speed cameras.  On the 5th July I went through some roadworks on an empty dual carriageway where the speed limit is normally 70 mph.  I was doing 60 isn and didn't see any camera warning or speed signs and neither did my wife.  I reduced my speed to 50 mph as that is the usual reduction on dual carriageways with 70 mph limits. A week later I got a letter telling me I was doing 50 mph in a temporary speed restriction area and they had photographic evidence.  And that is why I have to spend 4 hours doing a speed awareness course next week!

Actually Peter, unless they have repeater traffic speed limit signs then you have not broken the law. They can have as many cameras as they want on you but if the case went to the courtroom it would be thrown out if you can prove there was no signage repeated along the roadworks

Thanks, Kenny.

I thought of going back to check when I got the letter, but the roadworks were only about 100 yards long and there was a strong probability that the roadworks [painting road markings] would have been finished by then and all back to normal.  There was no way of proving it, unfortunately.

For correct information under The Road Traffic Act [1988] They must have a normal size warning sign red circle, white inner depicting  the speed limit prior to entering the zone then repeater signs smaller in size set at a distance of 500 mtrs apart throughout the zone until it ends when you will be advised with a round white sign with a black diagonal stripe through it indication that the zone ends and The National Speed Limit applies for the type of road you are on. Hope that helps.

If anyone should be unlucky enough to be caught then you will receive notice by way of Section.172 of the RTA Road Traffic Act requesting information from the registered keeper of the vehicle to supply details of the driver for the time/date of the alleged offence. It is a criminal offence not to respond to this request with honest answers, remember a certain politician and his wife taken points along with a prison sentence for doing so?
