I have picked up my e type today and very nice it is too, one thing I need help/advice on is that the rear diff has been changed out from the standard to that of what I think is an XJS, an invoice states it as 2-88. Issue is that the speedo is not showing correct and I estimate the road speed to be 10mph higher than what the speedo shows. Any suggestions as to how to rectify, I really need it to be accurate for obvious reasons. Thanks in advance............Adrian

Thanks mate, this owners club site is fabulous, so glad I bought an e type but what a cost to get on this site ha!! Must admit it took me back to my younger days after picking up the old girl today and driving by the seat of my pants with 1970's technology and engineering it just came all flooding back. I'll put a few more pics up for everyone to hopefully enjoy. I live near Warrington and I am looking for a nearby "Classic Jaguar" specialist who knows e types who is reputable and able to service etc. Hopefully someone will come up with suggestions...........

From what I remember on my old cars there used to be a +/- facility on the rear of the speedo. There is obviously a mathematical equation relating to the new and old ratios but I'm not clever enough to know it. I sure its been asked before and Mr Google will oblige.

Another way would be to get someone with cruise control my Mercedes shows you the actual mph on the dash in figures have him/her set it at a given speed and follow them at a set distance for a reasonable time to determine your reading.

Try this, it starts with tyre ratios but goes on to gear ratios;

Adrian,

If you go an motorway there are posts one mile apart, drive at 60 MPH and see how long is takes you over or under 60 seconds.

You can get parts on eBay if the worst comes to the worst

Or if it all becomes too much Kenny and myself will take it of your hands for you.

Kenny,

Digital speedos tend to over read by an average of 10%, that is why speed cameras are calibrated to allow for error .

This is quite interesting

Hi Adrian,

Some good suggestions worth trying already.

There s a topic on Independent garages in the Jaguar owners lounge and you may find one fairly close to Warrington.  I did not that there is a garage recommended in Manchester in that list of independent garages.

I will have a look around and see if I can find what you are looking for.

Regards,

Peter.

Adrian,

My neighbours, Mr and Mrs Subtitle are from Warrington .

I should have bought an E Type instead of wasting my money on the Aston Martins .

Saying that, my XKR runs fantastic now that I have had it serviced at a decent garage .

How about these Adrian?

Trevor, I was under the impression with the car being a classic from an older generation then the speedometer would not have been of the electronic variety. I am aware of the 10% waiver the speed partnerships tend to work to although not all I may add. Some authorities allow 10% + 1mph then others allow 10% + or - 2mph however some will not all the 10% whatsoever.

Adrian, take no notice of Trevor, he does not want to take the car of your hands its just me  <_<

Kenny,

The links given are for non digital speedos. it is obviously getting too much for hi, so I'll toss you for it.

I used to be under the impression that digital speedos were dead accurate , but far from it. They claim it would be too expensive to produce extremely accurate speedometers, and as one that under reads is an MOT failure, that is why they over compensate.

Like everything else in the digital computer age Trevor the accuracy would only depend on the information that it being processed. I can only assume that the gearbox would be giving a signal in terms of speed to the ECU which then displays the reading on the dashboard. Therefore if the gear ratios are incorrect then then the speed would be incorrect which is reflected on the readout. All to complicated, give me back my old Cooper S or TR6 where I just looked at the dial

I had my speedometer checked b the Warwickshire Police on the 7th July.  They told me that I was doing exactly 50 mph, which is exactly what my speedometer read.  The road was a 40 mph speed area.

Kenny,

I had a Cooper S, and I couldn't agree more with the other points, far to complicated for their own good .

Peter,

If your speedometer was checked, and you knew you were doing 50 MPH in a 40 MPH, why?

ATB,

Trevor

Simple, Trevor, I didn't know I was in a 40 area  --  temporary signs.

That is why the speed camera checked my speed!

Hi guys, I took the car out and a mate drove in his car in front of me at selected speeds of 30 40 and 50mph's, I was right

the speedo is definately out and by around 10mph. It's not a solution as I dont want to be doing maths when driving, but at

least I was right to be aware it was not right.

Hi Adrian,

I have found a very easy way to check you speedometer.  We went to Tesco this morning and on three occasions we passed through those speed warning signs.  My speedo read 30 when I was doing 30 and 20 when I was doing twenty.

They must have them in Warrington   ----   apparently they have a Rugby League team, of sorts, who play at a Stadium known as the Geri Halliwell.

HI Pete, I will make a start on contacting classic Jag specialists I have a few lined up now and hopefully they will rectify the problem for me.

Hi Adrian,

Glad you are getting something organised to cure the problem  --  I will be going North a week on Saturday and will be passing through Warrington to take my cousin to lunch  ---   so I will look out for an E-Type.

Peter.
