I've had my x-type 2.1 V6 petrol for over a year, and love it. Everything about it is good. The problem is it has had an intermittent problem, causing misfires at 3000rpm You could avoid it by kicking down, at 6000rpm with the sport button pressed it was as happy as Larry. I have been to local garages, to hear them complain about how hard the engine is to work on. The main dealer basically said leave your cheque book at the desk. I have read the codes and they are all about misfires. I've worked my way through the problems, plugs, coils. The dealer said it was a faulty Lambda sensor, so we changed it. It may have been faulty but it wasn't the fault.

The problems have become unbearable since Tuesday when the car passed it's NCT, the Irish MOT. It passed without fault, but leaving the centre the engine malfunction light was on and the car is virtually un-drivable. The idle is very unstable and it won't rev passed 3000rpm, it just sounds like it is gulping for air. Infact the air box sounds like it is trying to burp the alphabet. I think when they were bouncing it on the suspension tester they must have shaken something loose. Today's codes are:

  1. N/A
  2. P0305 cylinder 5 misfire
  3. P1313 misfire rate catalyst damage fault bank 1
  4. P1316 injector circuit / IDM codes detected
  5. P0037 HO2S Bank 1 sensor 2 heater circuit low
  6. P0355 Ignition coil E primary / secondary circuit malfunction
  7. P1000P on board diagnostic system readiness test not complete (stays on)

I'm hoping to find someone who like Jags to give me some advice. My problem is there isn't much sympathy round here from the Japanese car owners, I've the only Jag in the village.

Thanks, Declan.

HI Declan, and welcome to the Club.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes, and I hope that one of the members can help you, as I am of the era that used a lump hammer to solve problems.

But there are quite a few members with technical expertise and I am sure they will be along to help and advise.

And look out for my s type in May somewhere between Dublin and Co. Galway.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Declan--Its hard to say what the problem is-- but-- if I was you I would check for a air intake pipe could be  loose

or is split this would give you the problem + did you say you had replaced the plugs .???

Thanks for your replies lads. It's nice to hear from people who's reaction is better than "teach you to buy a Jag".

Yes, it has a full set of good quality plugs, and all the coils have been replaced with genuine parts. The misfires were annoying, but these new problems are dangerous. There are no obvious splits in the air intake pipes. I'll have a better look in the morning.

Thanks for your help. And enjoy your trip to Ireland Peter, it's a lovely drive from Dublin to Galway.

Ok. Took the air box off, moved the pipes, pulled and prodded, and put it back together. I didn't find a problem, but the burping has stopped. It still won' rev passed 3000rpm.
