54 plate x-type 2.0ltr diesel no start

Hi guys.

 

I've developed a bit of a problem today! Tried to start the car after a bit of shopping and it just started whining at me! Tried it a couple of times more, exactly the same! I instantly thought it's a starter motor fault. Luckily i noticed an AA van parked on the carpark helping some other poor bloke out so I asked him to have a quick listen and he said it sounds like the starter motor isn't engaging, thus the engine not turning over. He said he's also known it to be a faulty fly wheel causing the same symptoms. He told me to keep trying as it may catch, which it did! Got her home and tried it again, wouldn't start! I left it for half an hour and tried again. After a couple of attempts it started and hasn't done it again since! 

 

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? 

 

I did post in the new member section earlier this evening but thought i'd try here too!

P.s. I have just (10:30pm) tried it again and i'm back to having the whine again!! Arrggghhhh!!!
