Have now got Jag back again but still have the same issue. The torque converter has been replaced again but the noise and surge in rpm still happens. I'm getting to the point where I may just have to live with it. No-one can identify why or where the noise etc is coming from as it is an intermittent fault.

Was back at my local garage yesterday, which are pretty good and they test drove it but couldn't make it make the noise etc. I've also used an OBD2 reader and no faults show up.

Not sure what else to do...any suggestions?

Well after 9 months of S-Type ownership I've decided that I'm beaten. I've lost count of the amount of things I've had to sort out on the car and although I know I'm going to take a big hit on the price I paid for the car to what I'll not get when selling I'm at the point where I just want it gone, for whatever I can get for the damn thing.

Had nothing but problems since the day I bought the car so have gone back to a BMW.

This will be my last post on the forum as I will certainly not be buying another Jaguar in this life or the next hopefully. I'm sure you'll all say I've been unlucky but even with bad luck the S-Type has still been an absolute dog.

Shame really as on the rare occasion it was on the road I enjoyed driving it.

Anyway, thanks to those who gave advice as was much appreciated but I wish I had not strayed from BMW ownership.

I know this is an old post, but as this sounds like an auto gearbox problem most BMWs of a similar age have exactly the same gearbox! a ZF 6hp26 IIRC or the weaker ZF 6hp19. so just as likely to have the same problem.

When I have problems with my British or Italian cars the culprit often has a ZF, Bosch of Getrag label on it.

This tearful account of transmission woes has me telling you my tale of recent Jag ownership. When I bought the car (private) within a few miles I noticed a rumble when going over 30mph coming from the floorpan/transmission area. Using it for the commute, the gearbox was terrible until warm, then just about bearable - almost comically bad. Now I am a biker, and have been for many years and one thing we bikers are used to is; a multi-plate wet clutch. And one thing these clutches are sensitive to is; fluid level. I was fairly sure I would have me a good transmission once I got around to replenishing the fluid.
So I got the kit together and force-filled the zf with 7 litres of lifeguard and the transmission has been wonderful ever since (as I expected). The trouble is that the refill instructions (fill until Oil seeps out of the refill port - start engine, do again) only manage to put 2.5 litres or so into the 'box and that will never cure the problems manifest.
Now I wanted to add an extra litre to the transmission but didn't want to drain/refill the transmission in order to do this. So after a while I thought about adding fluid to the zf via the Oil cooler in the unified water radiator. Going 'in' by the upper hose did not flow but the lower hose allowed fluid to be introduced albeit at a very slow rate, about 1 litre in 30 minutes!
My point is - if the rumble is apparent but the gearbox functions well when warm, add fluid the way I have described until it goes away and forget garage advice - they do not have the correct service instruction.
