Hi all new here.

I wanted a project car and the wife picked me up an S Type 3.0SE 1999 auto at Christmas. I was hoping you all could give me any ideas.

The car feels like it has a missfire when idling and when I took it for a quick blast up the road it barely got above 45 and over 3k. So I'm assuming this is an engine safe mode.

I am not getting any warning lights.

The battery was dead when it arrived.

And going by the last mot it came off the road in July.

I have brought a code reader which should arrive soon but do not know if any codes will be stored.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Club, Matthew.

A good battery of the correct size is essential for Jaguars, as there are a lot of electrical bits that need power.  On the Jaguar, you will find that if a battery is failing and not holding a charge the less essential functions of the car close down, and I guess that warning lights are amongst those.

When you gave the car a run you were definitely in limp home mode, and an OBD2 reader should tell you why.

Let us know how you get on. The s type is a great car and the 3 litre petrol engine is a unit well used by Jaguar.

Regards,

Peter.

The battery seems ok and the history suggests it was fitted at the end of 2013. I had it on a trickel charger for over 24hr. When I jump started the car before nothing electrical wanted to work but all is ok now.

Another quick question do the a-pillers pop off easily as the material needs redoing.

Will update with codes if any when it's plugged in.

Thanks for the quick response.

Hi Peter

I got my coder reader but cannot locate the socket, I have read on the forums here that it should be on the drivers side down with the pedals. But the is no socket that will fit the cable I have.

I brought the D900 reader on eBay and it works nicely on my Citroën.

Does the S Type have a different connector? or is the OBD located else where? 1999 S Type V6SE

Hi Matthew,

The socket is on the drivers side about knee high at the left side of the footwell.  Once you have found it, you will never forget it. My s type is the 2007 D, but I don't think they would have changed the location.

If Stan reads this, he will be able to confirm this or otherwise.

Update I plugged it in and it cannot read the S Type going to send it in for an MOT see what else it might need and get it on the diagnostics when it's there.

Another question a little of topic because S Type is sat around after few days the battery goes flat again would it be worth buying a Ring RSP150 that trickel charges using solar power.

Hi Matthew

I agree with Peter a new battery might well be the answer.  :)

If not something's on and running it down a trickel charger will add to your problem .??

Find out why it keeps going flat first .???

A good battery will perhaps cure all your problems because all sorts happens to a Jaguar with a dodgy battery.
