Mike,

Have you tried another battery ?, the computer systems on the Jags are very reliant on a good battery, any idiosyncrasies could point to an inadequate battery .

I would check that first (borrow one) .

Hi Trevor

having looked at the battery it looks small in the compartment (space on either side) is this normal? if not i will get a new one.

i have had the diagnostics done and all it has come up with is it had a power surge 60A fuse (glow plugs) keeps blowing

thanks for the infomation

i will keep updating

Definitely wrong battery, Mike.

Another member had the same problem and  sent a photo of the battery put in by the dealer, which might have powered a 1962 A40.

Check it out with your friendly local car accessory shop.

Regards,

Peter.

This is why I love car forums like this. That is a solution I would never have thought of, I would have assumed the alternator could provide enough VA for the instrument cluster, once the engine is running, irrespective of the size of the battery.

Hi David,

A lot of modern cars need a bigger battery, and owners should always follow the guidance in the handbook.  The Jaguar is a complex car and if the battery is starting to fail the car will determine was it can shut down to keep the car going.  Usually the radio is first, then the electrical screen demisters and so on.

Halford offer a 5 year guarantee, so it must be safe to assume that a battery may start to fail when it is just over five years old.

Regards,

Peter.

Beware of the Halfords own make batteries. They have a guarantee, but I have had more than one fail on me within the guarantee period. Problem with 5 year guarantees is that even if you can find your original purchase receipt, the print will have worn off. Luckily, as it was Halfords brand, and batteries are date coded, they replaced it. Took some arguing though.

Hi all

Just a quick update, new battery fitted (no joy) looked at the workshop manual, it advised to test the main earth strap.

PROBLEM SOLVED with the Speedo

As for the rest of the instrument pack it turns out it needed a new "body control module "

Correct, David.

I never use "Own Brand" things like batteries.  Luckily, at the end of our road there is a small Auto accessory shop who will get you exactly what you want if he hasn't got it in stock. Jaguar usually fit Varta batteries and they are dated when installlled.

And with guarantees, I always photocopy them, fold them so the light doesn't get to them, and if it is car related I put it in the folder I keep all receipts, MOTs, tyre replacements etc.
