Hi all,

I'm on the cusp of buying a 06 plate 3.0 petrol S Type auto.

As I understand things, (and please allow for the fact than I am an absolute Jaguar neophyte) an different six speed auto box was introduced with the advent of the diesel engined model circa 2004.

Please, can anybody confirm that an 06 plate 3.0 petrol auto would have the later transmission?

Thank you.

Hi Paul, and welcome to the club,

.

I believe the 6 speed auto gearbox was introduced on the s type in 2003, with the same gearbox going into the 2.7Diesel introduced in 2004.  I don't think that the gearbox was changed after that.

You will enjoy the S Type.  Sir William Lyons described the Mk1 as having Grace, Pace and Space. The s type has all three also!

Regards,

Peter.

Thank you Peter.

I have to admit to being in somewhat of a quandry as to whether to go for the petrol or diesel model but have heard horror stories about the diesel DPF and EGR.

With all the news at the moment about diesel engine cars going to be taxed more etc

I think I would think before buying .????

Currently the diesel engine emissions [nitrous oxide] are taxed a lot less than petrol engine emissions [Co2] by about £200.

Taxing cars on emissions was part of the decisions by the EU and supported by all member nations to control the effect of exhaust gases on the environment.

Diesel engines had to reduce soot particles which they did with the introduction of a Diesel Particular filter which periodically requires regeneration or in common parlance a "burn off" by about 20 minutes at over 45mph +  ---  not difficult.

I have never had a problem with the DFP.

EGR valves will be fitted to all new cars in the next few years, including petrol engined cars  -- some already are.

Currently the 2.7 diesel engine in Jaguars is taxed at £285 a year, and the 3.0 litre petrol at £485.  I don't think any vehicles meeting the EU4 directives will have a tax increase. I think what MIGHT occur is that all diesel powered vehicles not meeting EU4 directives will have to have Diesel Particulate retro fitted.

Over 50% of cars in the uk are currently diesel powered which is a thought that politicians will consider.  After all, car owners have votes.

I was really saying about whats in the papers today that they are thinking of a £10 tax for diesel

cars to enter city centres .???

I hadn't heard that Frank. I have to admit, the petrol engined car I had in mind was of better specification than the diesel I was considering, which was why I asked the original question :)

Maybe these cars are as easy to "up-spec" as the Rover 75 is ;)

Hi Frank,

I think the papers were just throwing up something that Boris Johnson had said about exclusion zones.  The biggest problem is that emissions from any car are higher when they are ticking over and London traffic is not noted for quick trips through the city.
