USB/iPod connection issues

Dear all,

 

I have tried to set up my iPod touch via the USB but it tells me to "Dock" the iPod. I tried docking the iPod but can't get it to work. Can anyone give me a set by step to adding my iPod through the USB or bluetooth connection.

I use a 320 GB external hard drive for music in my 2009 xf. It has to be FAT 32 format (Field Access Tables). I have tried just plugging in a memory stick with mp3 files on it but find the playback is iffy.
