Please can somebody help? My dashboard says gearbox fault on longer journeys and I lose 4th and 5th gears. This does not happen on short journeys. Does anyone know a cure?

Welcome to the Club, Wayne.

We are told by Jaguar that the gearbox Oil is for the life of the car, but many members do have the gearbox serviced around 75k miles.

I would suggest you contact one of the Gearbox experts. Mackies Transmission in Scotland is very Club friendly, and will certainly give you some advice.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi there, I'm in a similar boat I think.

My 2003 model has only 80K on the clock but came up with a 'gearbox error' I even had a garage charge me nearly £70 to tell me that I needed a new gearbox.

Anyway I'm not going to spend £1,500 on a recon being fitted, I'm gonna try buying one via eBay and get a friendly mechanic to fit it. Big question for me is, what should I buy? Is there an easy way to check what spec my gearbox is? Do I need a torque convertor?

Any help from anyone would be superb :)

Hi Adrian,

Go to  Vindecoderz and you will find the gearbox details of you car.  Google around and you will be abe to source a similar one.

Good Luck.

Peter.

Hi Adrian,

David is quite correct.  The ZF gearbox 6 speed is in all Jaguar S types between 2002 and 2008, as well as BMW, Rolls Royce and Bentley.

Ford indeed made their own version, and even though they owned Jaguar at the time did not use it on the S Type or the XK and other Jaguar models.

As an aside, ZF made this gearbox in Germany from 2000 but I have certain knowledge that they have bought a large piece of land formerly having been a Lucas Factory not very far from where I live and only about 25 miles from the new Jaguar engine plant, 6 miles from Castle Bromwich and 18 miles from the JLR works in Solihull.

Regards,

Peter.
