electric window fault

I own a 2004 stype diesel auto

The drivers window won`t function

I hear a slight click when I depress button but no sound of any motor or anything mechanical at all.

All the other windows work as they should

Ideas?

From what I read its a common fault on jaguars. Just had to buy a new after market one for £85 for nearside window which had crashed down inside the door! Garage said it was a bit of a nightmare to do.

From your description, I'd suspect the motor. Unfortunately, on these cars, the motor is an integral part of the regulator.

Easy enough to do but time consuming as you have to remove the glass first and then the regulator.

Personally, I'd disconnect the motor cable then apply 12 volts to the motor and see if my diagnosis is correct before going to the trouble of removing everything.

My problem was that the cable snapped inside. The aftermarket one does not have any cable and it is guaranteed 12 months. Unfortunately, i dont have the confidence at the moment to do some things on the jag but over time I will attempt most things with the tools I have available.

I paid a small garage operator £60 to fit mine which I thought was quite reasonable considering that it is not a straight forward job.

job now sorted.

In the end it was the switch that wasn`t working properly .(would send window up but not down)

That was after I was sent the wrong window mechanism (twice)

At the third attempt, I fitted new mechanism as one in car although working, was on verge of going wrong (cable badly frayed etc)and after getting that far into door didn`t fancy getting in there again in a hurry.

I know on mine the cable broke although motor was good. Had a new complete mechanism (after market)

Do you know where I can find the mechanism? I think I need the drivers side set as I can hear the motor but upon inspection the cable has come off.

Hi all,

I have an issue on my offside rear window dropping down and not coming back up under power. I've wedged it as a temporary expedient but will get in there over the next weeks to have a look. Sounds like teeth / cable slipping on the motor / regulator as the switch fires the motor, it just won't go up. There are repair kits on eBay for not much, wonder if it's worth grabbing one of these so I don't need to go in twice, has anyone used them before (above is a link etc).

Hi Russ,

My Son had the same problem with his 14 year old Skoda -- the part on eBay was not expensive, but he wedged the window up and then bought a Jaguar! I would also check out Breaker Yard. But there is a member, Denis [The Jag Den] who might have one.

Hi Peter,

At £15 for a new repair kit, not sure I need to go second hand, but I'm happy to take advice, especially from an expert like Denis.

Not sure if I'm getting lazy or just just don't like having the car in bits without being able to fix her, so if it's possible to buy the part before disassembly, that's my preferred option .

the particular drivers window, at the touch of the button it drops straight down and will not return only on locking the entire car and up it comes any suggestions its a 2002 s type

I've just bought a S-type jag and on the way home the drivers window went down and then would not go up! About 4 inches it would rise and come down to settle at 2 inches!

Before I try and take the door skin off can anyone give me pointers?

Well no one seems interested so maybe my best way forward is to take the door skin off and take it to a auto lect to test the circuits and find the problem that way?

Sorry that there has not been a reply - possibly because members having been getting too wet in the UK weather!

A sticky window can sometimes be cured by a spray of WD40. It works with my s type.

There's a good chance it's a mechanical rather than electric issue. I've had to change the window regulators on mine, although at least one was just the cable coming off, it should become apparent with the door card removed. Luckily the clips on the Jag door cards are of better quality than some lesser marques, so you can hopefully pop them off and on without breaking them if you're careful 😉
