Hi everyone, hope you can help

My son has an x type 2004 2,5 manual 110k fsh

Yesterday he pulled off of his drive these was a bit of a bang and the car lost drive.

I've had a look at it today and the car starts fine clutch pedal feels good and it selects all gears. However when you try to drive the car it will move say 3 feet then there is a grinding sound and you loose drive. When you push the car in neutral it will move reluctantly with a nasty sort of clanging sound every one or two turns of the wheels. The noise sounds as if it's coming from a fairly light metal rather than a heavy transmission or diff knock. Sorry it's a bit long winded but any advice would be appreciated before I start pulling it to bits.

Hi Stuart, and welcome to the club.

I am not an engineer, but as your son's car is an all wheel drive I would look towards one of the drive shafts.

I would jack the car up at the front, chock the rear wheels both directions, car in neutral, handbrake off, and try turning a wheel by hand.  I would guess that if you hear the noise you have located where it is coming from.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Stuart,

Breakeryard  , which I have used before can source you a part from one of their affiliated breakers.

There is also Rimmer Bros, and also the David Manners Group and  SNG Barrett will supply new part.

eBay is also worth looking at.

Regards,

Peter.
