Hi all been a wile since posted anything on site but just had a weekend in Surrey and thought I would just give some facts and figures on my fuel consumption for the journey.

Let's start with my car, it's an XF 3.0d s 2011 premium luxury with just over 50,000 mile on clock.

The journey was from Newcastle upon Tyne to Guildford in Surrey a total of 307 mile.

I filled the car to the brim to the cost of £70.00 @ £1.19 per litre, I cleared both trip computers to zero, and the car told me I had a range of 385 mile.

I set the cruse control to 75 mph and set off.

On arrival the computers read distance 307.6 / Av speed 51.2 / Av fuel 39.2 / range remaining 182.

For the return joinery I put £30.00 to top up, but this time never used cruse control but let's say I wasn't the slowest on the road

Interesting post.  I had to disconnect my battery the other day but took a reading off  the A setting which I normally never reset and for the 6 month period roughly I got 39.2 mpg over circa 3000 miles, which I am happy with.  I am not known for hanging around either!

My indicated fuel consumption hovers around the 26 MPG mark and I always fill the tank to the brim at the same filling station. My own brim-to-brim calculations are within 0.1 MPG of those indicated so it seems reasonably accurate.

 

My drive to work, of some 10 miles, is normally the longest journey I do and as the engine is so big, it never gets fully up to temperature so 26 MPG isn't unreasonable I feel.

I would be happy with that Dewi (Dai) (Dave) in Welsh. Funny enough I have a trip to Guilford planned shortly, my Son, Son in Law, Brother and myself are attempting the Top Gear track in a reasonably priced car namely the Kia Cee'd against the clock. I can assure you none of us will be watching the mpg we will all want to claim the fastest lap time on the day.

I went down to Welwyn yesterday using the M6, M1, and A414, and encountered various congestion areas, road works and some speed restrictions as well as some country lanes.

 

The round trip of 225 miles gave me 45.3 mpg, and I drove back in 2 hours and 15 minutes.  The fuel I used was a mix of Epo, and Applegreen, bought in Ireland at roughly 99p a litre.  It must be pretty good fuel.

I am glad to hear someone else can get 42 mpg out of their jag because I can mine and when I have told anyone this I am told I am dreaming, if I set my cruise control at 56mph behind a truck, I do that ofter as I am a trucker and I am happy at 56 I can get more, I live out in the country and If I drive carefully I can average about 32 mpg.

Hi David,

 

The best I have had from my diesel is 53 mpg on a run from Birmingham to Sheffield, mostly on the M1 with speeds limited to 50 mph.

 

When I was towing a caravan I used to set the Cruise Control at 56 mph and sit in the inside lane an relax.  Easy!

 

The 2.7 diesel has twin turbos, and the second one kicks in around 68 mph [2000 rpm] and keeping under that is both comfortable and inexpensive.

A big engine can be good on mpg if driven correctly , i done a run from Felixstowe with another one of our drivers to Scotland, he had a 430 bhp Volvo, I have a 520 bhp Volvo, i got one and a half mpg more than him, over a year that's a lot of saving, maybe paid for the bigger engine, if i use all that power it may be a different story.

If I drive at 70 mph with the "S" button on, and accelerating hard my mpg drops to the lower 30's.

 

It is nice to drive a Jaguar in a stately fashion.

Recently did a run to Swansea from London. 202 miles, 80% of which was about 88 mph on cruise control. 41.2mpg for the trip and 185 miles of the 'range' used.

Delighted with that!

So would I be, that's very good, I find I am now trying to get as many mpg as I can and I have found that high speed cruising does not guzzle the fuel, no doubt sitting at a 100 mph would give the mpg a hammering.
