Cam belt changing

hi I was wondering what the recommended mileage that you should change the cam belt on a 3lt diesel

The reason for asking is I'm about to buy a 09 plate with 95k on the clock ,it as full service history

Hi Adrian and welcome to the club.

 

On the s type, whose engine is the one that was uprated for the XF, a change of cam belt should be done at 105k,

 

The XF is a rather good car, and with a FSH could be a good purchase.  But it is worth checking if the owner would knock off about £350 for the cost of a cam belt change.

There was a dealer in Coventry advertising last year cam belt changes for an s type.  However, I think the price could well have been nearer £500 under normal circumstances.

 

I guess an independent garage would charge about £350, but that is stll a guess.

Hi Adrian , I have a 3ltr diesel xf and have just had my cam belts changed ( 2 one at front and one at rear of engine on the V6 so the garage informed me ) at 97000 miles .Jag recommend doing them at 105,000.

I'm in a similar position. If the car has a 10 year service history with the main dealer, would they carry out the cambelt change as a matter of course when it's due?

I would say not. It is not a part of a normal service and the previous owner was looking to sell on (to you?) so although the dealer probably asked the owner....

If it is a main dealer history you can look it up online or ask the dealer concerned who should be able to help.

Agree with Big John. The dealer will not just change the Cam Belt, however, they should be making the owner aware that the change is due during the service when reporting any other faults that may have been identified. But again, the customer is under no obligation to have the belt changed and could say no, especially if the car is soon to be sold.

I was recently contacted by my dealer to do the cambelt on my 2.2 xf diesel with a price of 550, had it done with the water with 2 other belts at my local garage I've used for years for 350.

Note here the car had done 43k and was 7 years old, the 7 years old triggered it.

Thanks for the replies. I spoke to the main dealer concerned but didn't really get anywhere. They just said that as a matter of course, they'd tell the owner between services 7 and 9 that it needs doing. This car is a lot thirstier than I was led to believe though.
