Hi.I could do with a little advice,i had my engine warning light came on so i found a garage with the correct gear to read the computer faults, after emptying my wallet they informed me that i had two of four oxygen sensors faulty,as i always get the faults repaired asap i asked for a quote but when they said £300.00 i thought that it was a bit pricey,i can not check them or get near to the problem as i am now disabled so i am reliant on garages being honest, would anyone have a clue if this sounds right, this is not a main dealer i think, because i am a ex forces  i tend to trust to quickly, thanks for any help.the said these were i think Wide range oxygen sensors?

Hi Paul,

Did the garage give you the codes when they scanned your car?

You can buy an OBD2 code scanner for around £25.  I found that cheaper than asking a Jaguar main dealer to scan it as they charge £69 for half an hour.

I will see if there is a better price for these sensors.

Regards

Peter.

Hi Paul,

I have a had a check of the main dealer price of a sensor and it is around £95.

Bay offer them at around £45.

If you had a local mechanic who would fit them eBay MIGHT be the best route.

Regards,

Peter.

Two sensors new are a few quid, depending which of them has gone they can be a bit of a pig to get to, I have good second hand sensors if you can find out which ones have gone, There are two different types, Up and down stream. Purely as an example I could supply and fit two good second hand for £130

That looks a good price, Mark.

The fitting is often the hard bit, and good fitters are hard to come by.

I worked in Yorkshire for 12 years in the seventies an early eighties.  Even though I am a Lancashireman, and took a bit of joshing for that, I enjoyed working with good, honest and helpful people.

Very helpful, Mark.

Just had a thought, It would be very unusual for two sensors to fail at once, Are you sure these guys aren't trying to pull your pants down? And yes I have a code reader that will tell me which sensors it is.

Ok,there might be more truth in that statement than you think, there"s been quiet a few unanswered question that are gentle left and moved on to another planet, ive just spoke to them again and the bloke who answered the phone even thought it was odd that the fault codes were not recorded on the bill, only wide band sensors failed, also the garage gentleman said i might have to bring the car back to do it again,to which i said have a got to pay again?to which i was told he might have written it down somewhere,i am a bit concerned now that the other jobs were carried out, gear box, brake fluids changed, drain and flush the coolant,it might be easier if i go up to Mark in Leeds and take up his offer,

Further to this sensor episode at last we have some information,it would appear that the sensor which have been in question are-Bank 1 sensor 1 and bank one sensor 2,but just to throw a spanner in the works,as far as i can remember i was told that when i had a twin sports exhaust fitted that this would do this, there is no drop in performance i had it up to 110 mph the other day with much more left.any ideas or change them and suck it and see?
