When I am in the car and want to get out the handle will not open door, I have to press lock and unlock on the key fob in order for the handle to work. Any ideas anyone?

The door appears double-locked. Does the same happen on all the other doors?

How about if you push the centre console unlocking switch - just to  unlock.

Do you have speed locking?

Does the door open from the outside?

I can't help but will say I have had this exact same problem twice in the last few weeks so am very interested in the solution. Just imagine if the battery in the key fob was going flat, no-one can get in or out!

I have this same / a similar issue, exacerbated by a dodgy key fob (I've just bought the car and it's moving up the snagging list!). I have to reach over to the passenger door and either open it or press the door lock, which works some of the time. I'm changing the battery in the fob tonight which will hopefully help, and I understand the previous owner did some work on the locking mechanism inside the passenger door, which could've contributed to the issue. It would be great if someone has a definitive answer before I have to start taking things to pieces ;)

Hmmm, unless he still locked in ;)

Changing the battery in my fob has helped as I now have this option, but the unlock microswitch is on the way out and I don't trust it, so I need it refurbed or replaced at some point...

I am texting from the inside of the car, not really, sorry for delay I am in the middle of moving house. I can't see a centre console switch, could it be the one on the door, what is the speed locking? They say ignorance is bliss but it aint     HELP please!

Haydn,

The internal central locking switch is on the centre console, as in this photo:-

console.jpg

It is the one next to the hazards switch and looks like a side view of a car door with a key symbol superimposed.

The panel is directly below the audio controls and may have three or five switches on it.

Speed locking is where the doors automatically lock when the car's speed reaches 5MPH.

Hope this helps :)

Have tried the centre console switch which does open the door and the speed lock does work, any ideas Raistlin mate?

What happens when you push the locking button on the driver's door handle?

What happens when you try to open the passenger door from inside Haydn? Do you hear the locking servos running?

Can you manually open the door OK from the outside?

Sorry for lots of questions but I'm trying to work through things logically.

Hi haydn

I had a problem with my locks mine is a X type but it could be the same .????

It started with the drivers door not locking with the fob I had to lock and unlock  it with the

key not always but it was anoying.???

I took it to the small garage I use-- its a one man garage but he's good and this is what he did====

Opened the drivers window then put the key in the ignition and turned it on then holding the inside

drivers door handle he locked and unlocked the door with the small lever just above the inside

door handle you could hear all the locks going in and out so he then squirted WD 40 useing the

small red pipe right into the inside door handle and also the door lock itself then worked the

small lever a few times again .???

He did say to me if it keeps doing it I will need a new drivers door lock ---Ive used the car about

10 times since and its done it once so fingers X.

I'm following this with interest as it sounds like we're having similar issues, my 2001 doesn't have a switch on the centre console, but there is a button on both front doors. The 'drive away door locking' feature works and locks the doors once the car is moving. TBH, this is a bit unnecessary and I'd disable it if I could which would pretty much solve this issue.

Before I had the key fob sorted, I had to lean over and pop the passenger side button, or open the passenger door, as the drivers door button doesn't unlock and the drivers handles are non-operational once the locking has engaged. Once I was unable to do this and ended up climbing out through a back door I had managed to open!

If there is a passenger and they open their door 1st, it allows the drivers door to open, but this is not always the case, so I often have to remove the key from the ignition and use the fob. It's all a bit annoying, embarrassing if strangers are in the car and potentially dangerous as if we did have an accident, we're locked in tight!

Hi Russ I'm not a betting man but from what the fitter who cured my problem

said ??I would say your trouble  is down to the drivers door lock.???

Hi Frank,

It would be a relief to sort it, I'll try your fitters WD40 method in the drivers door, the thing I'm slightly suspicious of is the previous owner said work has been done on the passenger door CL module. Perhaps I'll do both ;)

Cheers, Russ

I'm coming to the conclusion that you are right in both cases Frank.

It has never happened on my car but a couple of S Type drivers and an X Type driver at work have reported the symptoms.

One suggestion was to remove the door card before spraying any releasing agent as it is possible that a stain might eventually appear on the face of the door card if the spraying was enthusiastic.

I'm not quite sure how that would happen knowing the construction of the door card but I think I'd remove the card rather than take the risk :)

Good advice as always ;)

Tempted to a avoid p*****g about and just have the door cards off to see what's going on. I have black leather, so unlikely to stain, but randomly spraying WD40 could do more harm than good.

Thanks :)

Disabling speed locking is a simple enough task if you know somebody local with the Jaguar diagnostics Russ.

As an aside, a few years ago I enabled speed locking in my Rover 75 after having been stopped in traffic and seeing a monster of a man on the pavement giving my car some far from cursory glances.

Being in a certain part of Wolverhampton, I operated the central locking which, of course, was loud enough to be obvious and aforesaid monster-man decided to give me a few well chosen words of advice

So now, the situation doesn't arise as my car is always locked when I'm in it and it automatically unlocks when I turn the ignition fully off, meaning the engine can safely be shut down if appropriate without the doors unlocking.

Some of the places around Wolverhampton where i have to drive, I'm not going to disable it "any time soon" as my students would say

As a matter of interest, here's something which works with X Types, cribbed unashamedly from another forum, which might work with the S Type:-

Turn on the ignition so all the dash lights come on but don't start the engine.

Lock the door using the button on the door handle and then unlock the door (but don't open it) 3 times.

Turn off the ignition.

Lock the door using the button on the door handle and then unlock the door (but don't open it) 3 times.

Turn on the ignition but dont start the engine - you should be able to hear a beep.

Lock the door again as before then unlock it (only once this time) - a final beep should be heard.

If all goes according to plan your doors should now
auto lock when you go over a certain speed (about 5-10mph). This will
also auto lock the doors if you reverse away. This mod will be
operational until you repeat the above steps to switch it off.

If you try it and it works Russ, please will you let me know?

Hi Paul,

I already have the autolock / drive away door locking activated if we're talking about the same thing. I live on the Isle of Wight, so less issue with undesirables trying to gain entry, I also have a black belt in karate if it came to ejecting someone ;)

So I'd be happy to disable the autolocking, which would then solve the issue of being locked in the car and unable to open the doors except by removing the key from the ignition and using the key fob. Is there a similar procedure for doing this or do I take it to a specialist?

That said, if I got the driver and passenger door locks working as they should, I wouldn't need to disable speed locking, so either option will work for me.

Thanks, Russ

PS. Finally getting some wax on her prior to the Jag show tomorrow and she looks great! Photos to follow...

I know you have speed locking enabled Russ. The given instructions suggest that the operation either enables or disables. However, I tested the instructions given above on my car and they didn't work.

It'll be a trip to the dealer or an indie, or somebody on the forum who has the appropriate kit. If you're going to be at Gaydon on the 19th September, I'm sure it can be disabled then ;)

I'd certainly be tempted to remove the driver's door panel ( It takes only a few minutes) and then fix the underlying problem.  Watch the mechanism (as far as it is visible) while carrying out the operations Frank mentioned to gain an insight as to where the WD40 should be directed before giving it a good spray. I believe Haydn's problem is the same.

Sounds as if this is the same so I will have a go as soon as I can, hate moving, missus takes up all my time. No not like that.

Hi ---There's a lot of things being said about the speed locking of the car could put you in danger

if you had a bump its just that I've always thought and was told at one time that they lock to

prevent the doors  flying open if you have a heavy front end bump so preventing a Concettina

affect and not just for bad people getting in .???

And so saying this-- I would say keep them working but of course  its everyone to there own choice .???
