Hi guys driving home tonight and the car goes into restricted performance mode :( any ideas please

Hi Kim,

Is there any code coming up? An OBD reader will give you the code which should tell you the problem.

Very frequently the restricted performance is telling you that something electrical is not getting its own way.

Let us know what it is when you find out.  Information is always useful.

Regards,

Peter.

hi kim, take the car to a garage that you trust tell them whats happened ect and that your getting the code ect ask them to see if they can diagnose with their machine some garages charge a small fee of £20 for this but can be worth it. find out wat prob is and get price for fixing it. if you were in the central belt area of scotland I would tell you to take it to jaguar prestige in paisley. all the forum members  recommend them as do I  you can phone them for advice ask for dougie or jim. tel them on 0141 887 2861  very helpful. mater of fact phone them first. charlie

Hi Kim,

The S type 2.7 Diesel has two EGR valves which can sometimes get sticky and won't open. They are at either side of the V6 and are a bit tricky to get at.

To clear them out a good blast with the s button pressed sometimes works, but if it doesn't, get a can of Wynns EGR cleaner and follow the instructions which basically is to run the engine when at its normal operating temperature, take out the air filter on the right hand side of the engine at the front and spray down the air intake with revs at about 1200rmp.  Use the whole can.  You will need another person to keep the rpm steady at 1200 rpm and not exceeding 1500 rpm.

I keep a can in the boot! They only cost about £9.50 and Halfords stock them.

Peter.

If they don't clean I recommend a trip to Prestige Jag in paisley as well.  They did mine and car running really well now. They will check the code and make sure the correct work is done.

Thanks for the advice guys. I live 50 miles north of Aberdeen so Paisley is a bit far away. Hubby works at a garage so he now has his instructions on what to do with my cat :))

Hi Paul,

The Air filter is at the front right in the engine bay.  Two clips retain the cover.  Unclip and just lift the cover and slide out the filter.

Lucky you, Kim.

If the Valves do need replacing, it is a DIY job for someone who knows his way round an engine.  A quick glance at either side of the V6 and you will see them.

Unlike the X Type, the valves cannot be blanked off

Thank you Peter, I didn't realise it was as simple as that :)

Ordered two cans of Wynn's from a trader on fleabay at £5.99 each with free postage.

A little preventative, or pre-emptive, maintenance never went amiss :)

Hi Paul,

There is also some Diesel Engine Cleaner that works for under a tenner.  Into your fuel tank every 3000 miles and it does a good job. I did it before I went to Ireland, and with that and a good service the engine has been running very well.

Must be different on diesel , can't do that on petrol engine

Having had a look at the engine layouts, the petrol engines are quite different from the diesel, Phil.

On the petrol you wouldn't be able to it without removing it all. You can unclip with it in situ but it only opens anoint a inch.

Hi Paul,

I can't check at the moment as the boot is filled with cardboard for the dumpit.  But I do remember that it said in the instructions to use it in conjuction with the Wynns EGR cleaner so it must be.
