new too me 2.7d sport

hi everyone.

I have just got myself a 2.7d s type 2005 with a full main dealer history and 106,000k on the clock. Its had 1 owner its whole life and is in great condition. It DOES have the dreaded type 1 lurch (only when hot and never when cold) i have read about but at only £2700 i thought it was cheap, also occasionally it "chirps" when changing gear??? i love the car, although it does have a slight squeak from one of the pullies and the front heated screen only works about 6 inches right down the middle !

i dio however find it extremely hard to hit the mpg many said they get. when i picked up the car it was showing 24mpg. I reset this for the jurny home and at a steady 70 on the motorway it still only returned 24 as a ave despite mainly reading in the 40s on the instant. I had it terra cleaned last week, im now getting circa 32mpg on a run on a roads, but that is REALLY REALLY trying. I have checked for sines of smoke when accelerating but all seems good, no plumes as you would expect if it was over fueling, so may i ask what mpg you guys get?

Not good I'm afraid.  I have had my 2.7d 2005 for over two years now and it has done 102k miles.  On a motorway run I get around 45 and overall around 36mpg.  I've always thought that quite a decent return.

Mine has 163000 miles and goes like a train when needed but despite mostly doing town driving I am still getting 32mpg.  I'm more than happy with this as I am getting this despite rapid acceleration etc.  Get the ERG valves checked on yours. Mine has had them both replaced and when they were faulty there was no smoke and no fault codes but they were causing an issue with poor performance and poor mpg.

Hi John, and Welcome to the club.

 

Getting the car terra cleaned is a good first step. and it has showed a difference.

 

The best I have had from my 2.7D is 53 mpg going from here to Sheffield on the M1 with a steady 50 mph due to a long spell of speed restrictions because of road works.

 

A long trip usually gets me sarong 46 mpg and doing a fair complement of short runs on a tank full of Shell v-power I get around 38 mpg.

 

Harvey has mentioned the EGR valves and they can a bit sticky.  There is a terra cleaner process which will deal with the EGR valves but it costs over £200.  Wynns have a product which you can get for under a tenner at Halfords call EGR Cleaner for diesels.  It is easy to use and does the job.  They also sell an additive which can be used in conjuction once every 3000 miles called Diesel Engine Cleaner.

 

It is worth doing the above.  I also use best quality diesel rather that supermarket fuel and do notice the difference.

 

One question I would ask is if the cam belt has been changed as that job should be done ay 105k.

I'm guessing yours is an automatic?

 

I thought my consumption was poor at 30ish but that's with ten mile journeys to work. I expect if to be noticeably better on a longer run where the engine will have had time to warm up properly.

 

I am about to try Peter's suggestion of Wynn's EGR cleaner to see if that has any effect. My car has done 131k miles.

Just have a look and you can see them at either side of the V6 engine.

Yes there are still 2 egr valves, one at either side of the engine block near the top of the engine.

is it a big job removing the egr valves? ive just done it on my vito sport x and it was one of them jobs i really wish i had not started !

I thought it was beyond me and it took my jaguar specialist 6 hours labour. They told me in advance it was a time consuming job stating they did them regularly and it would still be 3 hours each valve. I think there is a lot of dismantling to get to them. Valves alone were £154 +vat each.

Yes, I wouldn't go to a main dealer either. Thank goodness there are decent Jag Specialists out there.

My EGRs were rock solid and no spray would have shifted them but at 162000 miles I suppose they had done well! :)

My car has only done 62k miles, and the engine was replaced while in the ownership of Stratsone at 21k.  I am basically giviing the EGR valves a a bit of preventive maintenance.

the only place id take my jag (for terraclean) is weldbank garage in chorley, the won large garage of the year this year and also terraclean garrage of the year.  If you use facebook look of WG tuning.  they do many cars per day, tony the owner is simply awesome.  If you want before and after readings done on the rolling road he will also do that.

Leaving blackpool i decided to come a different way home, so i jumped on the m55 and set cruise to 70mph all the way to just before tickled trout on the m6. i came off there went through preston and along a duel carriageway all the way to southport, then along the prom in southport to home and averaged 37.7mpg, about an hours worth of driving, i was still really really concentrating however.

i did the tyres a couple of days ago to 32psi(18") and tracking and camber have all been recently done with printout
