After 3 months of trouble free motoring my wife's beautiful S type diesel has gone bang! 70,000 miles full JSH It didn't use any Oil and ran smoothly as silk but without warning the bottom end has developed a death rattle. Jag Specialist I bought it from confirmed the engine was ruined. Result, the £5500 car is now worth £500. After researching it would appear I'm not the only one. Reason for this post? I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else. If anyone knows how to prevent or spot this then please share on the very good website. I looked into engine replacement but it was beyond economic repair. Every time I see an S type my heart bleeds....!

£2750 for a reconditioned one and then it needed fitting. I was concerned that I would be £9k plus into a £5k car. Ive always bought used and take my time to find the right one. It had sat nav and all the toys. Everything worked as it should and 36mpg average, then bang.

Where abouts you located? I used someone in Huddersfield for my transit engine rebuild. He's good and reasonable. If interested I'll pm you his number

Thanks for the offer but I've now sold the car for parts. I wasn't prepared to risk spending more money on her for the previously stated reasons. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that has managed to fit another engine. Was it easy, how much was the total cost?

Sorry to hear this Chris. Your plight scares me a little as I've had mine only two months with only one month warranty remaining. If this were to happen to me I would also be devastated (and financially wiped out). Any further on the actual cause? Were there any prior signs or symptoms or was it just sudden? I appreciate that if you no longer have an s type you may not want to spend time contributing further (or may not even get to read this!) but any info is valuable. Many thanks.

Most likely cause is diesel contamination of the engine Oil due to dpf failure.

Often caused by short journeys so regen cycle goes haywire.

No Oil contamination or regular short journeys guys. Take a look on eBay and you'll usually find an s type diesel for around a £1000 with 'engine troubles'

I'm not trying to scaremonger and admit I was unlucky. Up until it went bang I couldn't recommend it highly enough. One suggestion was too much diesel going into the engine. This couldn't be compressed by the piston so went bang. Another theory by some mechanics was Oil pump failure. Without stripping the car I guess I'll never know.

The engine in my s type was changed at 21k after Oil pump failure as i was Told when I bought it.

But I have heard that when the DPF is being regenerated fuel Oil is sent there to help and it can get into the engine Oil is unburnt.

Any idea of the engine replacement cost.? If I'd had the time and been brave I might have gone for it. Check out eBay 141725197072 I feel his pain!!
