Hi all,

 

I was hoping my 3.0 V6 wouldnt so thirsty... a 200 mile trip up north and back has used nearly 3 quarters of a tank! 

 

I thought... correct me if Im wrong but between 70-80 MPH the revs would be about 1 and a half... I was sitting at 2... 2 and a half, thought the revs would of been a bit lower saving me a bit of fuel and not having to accelerate as much ?

My diesel at 70 is doing 1500rpm so 2000 to 2500 is probably about right for a petrol.

Is your engine in a good state of service??

It might be an idea to stick a tube of redex in to clean the fuel system and injectors, at around 4quid it's worth a try!!

There have been a couple of other threads re fuel economy on the 3.0 recently which are worth checking out. Mine is thirsty on slow stop start stuff but surprisingly good at a high steady speed. As Andy says, ensure everything is in good order, inc fuel system and tyre pressures. Gearing is right for a petrol, and I find mine better using the cruise control as an electronic throttle rather than sawing away with the right foot all the time ;)

AHhh shame I dont have crusise control then, has had a recent service but wont hurt to stick some red ex through.

I thought it was too, but I have just looked up the list of optional extras that my car has on and it was included on that list.

 

I made a list of the cost of optional extras fitted to my car and came to £10,905, which fitted in to the price of the car in 2007   ----   something like  £29k to £51K.

 

If you look at the Jaguar website you are given a topic to "Build your Car', and you tick off what you want.

Just looking at your post re rpm on the 2.7 diesel. The rpm on my car is exactly 2000 at 70 mph which is also the point at which the second turbo come in, I am told.

 

Setting cruise control at 68mph on long journeys I get a much better fuel consumption.

What should a 3.0 V6 give m.p.g wise at 70 mph?

I was getting between 28 and 38 MPG

At a steady 70, which is rarely achievable, I'd be surprised if it wasn't 40+, at least according to the instant MPG, mine gives c40 at 80mph, but I'm only averaging c25mph overall...

Yep, my mistake, it's 2000rpm at 70!!

40+ mpg out of a 3ltr petrol auto?!? Never in a million years will any 3ltr auto do that!!

Official figures are extra urban, ie, never pressing the throttle, 35.1, urban, 18.5 and combined 26.4 which is more likely to be achieved.

Yup, I'm sure you're right Andy, but mines a manual, and does indicate 40+ at a steady 80 on the instant MPG, but it's not really a 'real world' figure on UK roads. But possibly / probably better than what to expect for extra urban which does include acceleration and idling:

 

Extra-Urban Cycle 

This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km).
