I have recently acquired a 2004 2.7 S Type (I'm entirely new to Jaguars). If I am stuck in traffic for any length of time and put the car in either neutral or park and apply the park brake repeatedly, the car gradually overheats and the park brake and DSC warnings light up. I have to pull over, switch off and wait 10 before I can move off again. the car is then fine, unless I repeat the stop, start cycle. Any ideas??? I know the DSC and ABS are interconnected, but is this a common problem.

How old is your battery??

Degrading batteries usually throw up dsc/abs and handbrake faults first.

As for the overheating, is the coolant level ok??

Oh, welcome to the forum.

Hello Andy. Thanks, I have no idea about the battery, but I have checked the coolant. Do you know if the PC board which controls the Climate Control is also responsible for the p brake/dsc/abs balance? I've had issues with that, too. The problem only arises in heavy traffic and if I apply the p brake.

Hi Christopher and welcome to the club.

Andy has pointed you in the right direction.  The S type, in common with other models, needs a battery in first class condition, and normally a battery will only last about five years.

It is also worth checking the service record if you have it, as sometimes changing the fluids can be skimped when a a car is serviced.

I have had problems with the park brake sticking on when applied  and when the car is started again from stationary   I do not get into heavy traffic much but I do resist the temptation to put the car into park and put the bark brake on on occasions when I am.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter and thanks.

That's really helpful, I'll have the battery checked as I say, I have no idea of it's age, probably same as the car, i.e. 11 years, or maybe it is due another change. I have the service record, but that doesn't give details, only that independents started to look after it 5 years ago. Don't know if that's good or bad.

I only go long distance once every 2 months or so and that usually entails hitting heavy traffic (funnily enough often around the M6, I was caught up after the lorry fire there last week), so it is not normally a problem.,

Regards

Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Independents are usually very good.  I have used a mobile mechanic for 12 years, who takes my car away, does the work, and brings it back.

Yes, the M6 is a well known car park.  I avoid it whenever possible, but having lived up here for over 30 years I know all the ways to do so.

Peter.
