Hi all :-)

I'm a new and first time Jaguar owner, I just bought myself a 2004 Jaguar S-Type 2.7 auto diesel sport with 115k one the clock (1 owner from new)

As this is the first time I have ever owned a Jag I was hoping that you lovely people could help me out and point out any common issues that I need to look out for

Hi Raj, and welcome to the club.

To look for issues I would first check if the cam belt was changed at 105k miles.

The 2.7 diesel engine is a very good one, and I guess that your model is prior to having the DPF system fitted.

The ZF gearbox is supposed to be sealed for life, but some members had found that changing the gearbox Oil at about 75k miles has had come benefit.  My car has only done 64k miles

I had my car Terracleaned about 15 months ago and it was very beneficial.  I also use premium diesel  --  a bit dearer but it is a performance engine and I do get a good mpg.

I sometimes get a problem with the EGR valves which I cure with a good blast on the A38, or some Wynns Diesel EGR Cleaner.

The s type is a great car to drive, so enjoy it!

Regards,

Peter.

Sills Sills Sills!

Check the sills for rust. Take off the plastic sill covers, held on with a few plastic clips. Some will break but they are easily obtained from Jag spares shops. Also remove the plastic undertrays to give easy access to the inside edge of the sills. My 2004 car had 1lb !!!!!!!! of dirt and old leaves inside the covers and under trays. All of it was very damp as the air never got a chance to dry everything out.

I would recommend treating any surface rust with rust killer ("Fertan" is a good option) paint it on with a brush, then I undersealed the exterior of the sills and injected waxoyl into the numerous trim clip holes to protect the inside of the sills.

Don't worry what it looks like after you have done this as the plastic covers will hide everything once reinstalled.

While you have the undertrays off check for any leaks from the gearbox / engine bay as the trays hide any small drips.

Also, if your are doing mainly town driving give the car a good blast now and again (weekly) to keep the egr valves unclogged. Mine were seized and it was £700 to replace them both.

The 2.7 diesel is the only s type with a timing belt so make sure it has been changed. If in doubt get it done.

Consider getting the "sealed for life " gearbox serviced as it isn't really sealed for life and would benefit if the car has done more than 75000 miles. It's a garage job as there is no gearbox Oil filler hole in the engine compartment. The gearbox sump cover is made of plastic and I beleive it also gets changed as part of the service along with the filter

Lastly, track down a good independent jaguar specialists in your area, much better and cost effective than any main dealer. Usually they are keen to help and advise.

Happy driving!

Hi Raj,

I had code P0402 come up yesterday, [EGR valves] and a good blast on the A 38 to Lichfield cured it.

Northfields Jaguar is recommended,  ---  it all depends on which part of the West Midlands you live.

I am in Sutton Coldfield and use a mobile mechanic who I have used for years.

Thanks Peter and Harv,

I've got it booked in for the Cambelt and a full service as there is no evidence that the cam belt has already been done.. That's cost me £400 all in from a mechanic based in Birmingham (PNV motors) that I have used for years. He used to be a mobile mechanic but has since settled into a garage. He has worked on the Range Rover sport 2.7 so he said he is familia with the engine.

I'm based in Dudley and work in Swadlincote so the EGR shouldn't be an issue for me as I'll be covering 95 miles a day over 3 motorways. That's actually why I baught this.. I wanted a sofa oh wheels lol.

I will look into the gearbox service as the car has done 115k miles so from the sound of it may be a good idea. I don't know of any Jaguar specialist around the Dudley area? I'll have a look on google.

I can't wait to pick it up this weekend :) thanks for all the advice and I'll report back once I get the car :)

Hi Raj,

You don't need a Jag specialist.  Just look up a transmission specialist.  But really, I would try first the mechanic you always use, as the gearbox Oil change can be done by most good car DIY amateurs.

Hi Guys.

I too is a new member and as Raj put it bought a Sofa on wheels with a bit extra. I bought an S TYPE 2007 WITH 145k.

The body work and interior is immaculate but I do need to do some overhaul. I got it for a snip so dontmid spending a bit of money on this. its also had an LPG conversion done, now here is the issues I have had? The brakes when you first start up is rock hard then clears up? the engine has a slight miss untill it gets up to speed, whether one just don,t feel the missing because of the power of the engine, I dont know.

Any I deas guys, also could someone recommend a reasonable FCR to get some Idea of what is going on.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys

Just one question I missed, does anyone know a decent mobile mechanic near Royston Cambridge who can work on these beasts?

hi

if the dccv has been replaced then its the climate control module, a bad dccv 4 way valve with damage it

if you remove the climate module and remove the pcb, it usually blows track on the board, link them out and it should work again

if you google s-type climate module repair, there should be loads of pics
