Headlights non operational

hi all,

been a wee while since I've been here due to 10 months of fabulous and trouble free motoring from the XF.  Trouble free until today, that is.

I was driving home to Dundee from Perth when I noticed that the headlights were a bit dim.  It wasn't until I hit a  bit of dual carriageway that didn't have overhead lighting that I noticed that both headlights were actually out.  I got home ok and got out to check.  I always keep my light switch on auto, just in case my rapidly advancing old age causes me to forget to either switch them on or off...

Anyhoo, my oem led's work ok, the full beam works fine as do the sidelights.  Unfortunately its the main headlights that have gone.  Now, I don't know if there is a fault alert on the dash or whether a message is flashed up to notify me of a problem, but there is nothing.  As I said, everything else is working perfectly, it's just the headlights that have gone with no warning message.  It seems very unlikely that both bulbs would go at the same time, so I'm thinking maybe a relay or the like has gone.  If anyone has any ideas, please let me know because I feel that if I put it into a Jag dealership I may as well put Wifey on Gumtree as I'd need to sell her to pay the bill.  I quite like Wifey and I'd hate to have to punt her on Gumtree or eBay as I'll never get what she's worth, so to prevent me being cold in bed at night, please help!

Being serious though, this is a major problem for me as I need the car not only for commuting, but also for visiting clients as part of my daily duties.

Please help if you can.

thanks

Frankie

Hi Frankie,

I am positive that you would have had a message if the bulbs had failed.  Those members with more electrical expertise than myself, and there are a lot, will be able to offer some help.

I would check the fuses, and then try the lights with the auto switched  off  ---  there could be a fault on the switch stalk.

Just guessing, but much cheaper than a Main dealer,

Good luck,

Peter.

Hi Frank

I own the premium 3.0 s and I drive with the auto on all the time as well, never got dashboard warning light when my head light burnt out. I would replace both bulbs I think cost about £4.00 each if that, then if the same thing happens you've spent minimum to rule out the coincidental card.

Don't take it to jaguar for Bulb replacement it's only three bolts, two under bonnet on top of the head light unit and the stupidest bolt ever in the wheel arch holding the back of the unit.

You never know it could be job done and you carry on getting your cuddles !!

Regards Dave

  • 1 month later...

I have a 61 plate early facelift 2.2 XF with HID lights. Over the last few days I had a headlight and occasional LED light problem on the offside. It started out initially fine then the headlight just turned itself off. The short term fix was "turn it off and turn if back on again" (really... - but I did have to lock and unlock it). There was no dash warning light of any problem. I inferred from the symptoms that it was a software problem as the car believed the lights were fine and the fault was intermittent.

I took it into a dealer (car under used car warranty) and after some fussing about (decidedly underwhelmed by my first Jag dealer service experience), they reset the software. I was told there was an outstanding software fix which hadn't been done on my car. Car was with the dealer for about an hour. Three days later all seems well. Hope that helps.
