Hi all,

looking at changing the radio head unit... what is the removal process on a 2001 model S Type ?

Ive ordered the ISO leads from eBay which is the folloiwng:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180915242359?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

These should convert whats in the back of the current standard Jag head unit into standard ISO.

If someone could confirm, that'd be great and also a guide on how to replace double DIN head unit thats in at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's the lead.

Removal is as follows.

Top left and right corners you'll see two covers along with one at the bottom where the heated seat buttons are/should be.

Remove them with a small hook or flat bladed driver.

You'll then see 8mm or 10mm bolts, unscrew them then the whole unit, radio, heater controls and cassette drawer comes out.

Put your stick into drive to give you room.

When you've got the whole unit out you can see what you've got to dismantle to get the radio out.

There isn't a single din faceplate available for the early S type!!

I fitted a Sony media player in my old car and had to modify the bracket to bolt the unit in and then used a ford fiesta faceplate to fill the gap, not pretty but it worked.

Frustratingly the oem stereo is a din and a half not double din.

Hope this helps mate.

Think that may be a mk2 facelift faceplate.

I rang audio connections who supply halfrauds and was told that there isn't one for the mk1, they actually recommended the fiesta faceplate to fill the gap.

Din is the standard stereo size fitted to most cars before intergrated radios like the ones fitted to modern cars.

Double din is quite literally two din sizes, commonly fitted to Japanese imported cars in the 90's.

The satnav unit in the facelift S type is double din.

Din and a half is slightly smaller than double din and not very common.

Your car can have a faceplate in din or double din.

Hi Andy

Very much appreciate your help on this.

I'm going to apologise now, as this may get painful  do i need to buy a combi radio / cd unit, take out the lower section with all its buttons etc, get a Fiesta faceplate and then somehow plug it in to the car and existing speaker connectors? if memory serves the lower LCD screen also has displays regarding the phone, which i presume relates to the jaguar one if fitted, i cant off the top of my head remember what else uses that lower LCD panel, i'm at work so can't check

my Apologies to Christopher also, as i'm not meaning to hi-jack your post

also, How does one find the radio code for the standard Jag head unit ? If I ever sell her I might have to put it back in ?

Thanks

Not to sure on the Radio code, but i presume you would need to contact a Jag dealer / Indy, possibly may need to provide proof of ownership as well? I guess a simple phone call would answer that.

I was lucky, I found the code printed on a garage receipt when the battery was replaced before i bought her, Happy days!

No, I only used the fiesta faceplate in the mk1, there is a faceplate kit for the facelift car, about £30 from halfrauds.

You only remove the lower section under the heater controls.

Then you can fit whatever you want.

I have to say that I'm really looking forward to seeing what people come up with in terms of changing the audio equipment :D Especially one where the touchscreen had been standard.

I like it as it is pro tem but it is beginning to show its age.

So if I understand correctly I take out the cd unit, leaving the bottom LCD panel in place? Then using a face plate insert the new combi unit? If I have that bit correct so far, I presume all connections are generic / standard I.e. Power / antenna / speakers? or do I need to modify the connections in someway?

I think, Claws, You have to buy an adpater wiring harness. It wasnt until 2004 I believe when most if not all car came with standard ISO wiring to fit any after market radio.

Ive had to buy an adapter lead of of eBay. Converts the current leads behind the radio to standard ISO so I can fit any aftermarket radio I like.

Claws, if you go to the first page Ive posted  a link to eBay where I bought my leads from to convert to ISO. they are £2.74 I think.

Its as simple as you plug one set of wires into the other and hey presto.

Claws, this is what your aiming for.

Double din pictured, single din gives you a little cubby box.
