Hi everyone, just bought my First Jag. A 2005 3ltr SE, not taken delivery yet no tax. Do these engines have timing belts or chains and when does it have to be changed. She has got 110.000mls on the clock

Welcome to the club, Keith.

The s type is a great car to drive and a real head turner.

The 3.0 litre engine has timing chains and apparently will last for ever.

The 2.7 litre diesel has a timing belt which should be changed at either 10 years of 105k miles.

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks for replying Peter, no doubt there will be more questions later. Just thought of one, is it compulsory to have an engine cover fitted, mine has so can I remove it or is it better to leave it on.

Hi Keith,

It is not compulsory to have an engine cover, but it is there for a reason,  --  both for quietness and cleanliness.

Cars without the engine cover do get quite a mucky engine bay and I think that caring about the engine bay is quite important.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter, thanks for the reply, the cover may be on the sump, as Halfrauds did a MOT last year and said that they can;t check everything as there is an under cover fitted also can't check engine as there are engine covers fitted, should these be removed for MOT or are they talking xxxx?. Thanks for any advice.

Hi Keith--I agree with Peter the cover is there for a reason yes---- both for quietness and cleanliness

and also to keep the air flow on the engine correct and things running at the right temperature.

I don't know of ever being ask to remove for MOT's.
