Hi Paul [and Paul],

I have heard that the EGR valves on the S type cannot be fully blanked off, and if a partial blank off is done, there has to be some ECU work, as Paul says.

I have had a few issues with the EGR valves on my car, stuck in a closed position, though.  The engine amber warning has come on and the OBD scanner gives me Code P0402 - exhaust gases not being dealt with my the EGR valves.

Sounds like the previous owner? Or dealer? Had problems and has had the EGR in the ECU de-activated but left the EGR valves open to recirculate (not fitted blanking plates) If no warning light seen prior to your problems. You be able to find replacement valves offered on eBay..The DPF filters it may be worth seeing if they can be sonic cleaned before buying replacements (can get aftermarket replacements) Your Sump Oil will probably be full of diesel plus it worth checking the intercooler. When changing sump Oil it's worth leaving a half a litre short of recommended refill amounts. Unless you do frequent motorway journeys buy a branded fuel and not a cheap supermarket fuel which will have a high bio content. If used on short journeys it might be worth using a fuel additive.

Though illegal:rolleyes1: now it may be worth having your EGR valves blanked and the ECU program de-activated properly then sort the DPF filters problem so there still visually in place for the MOT test. Unless there is excessive smoke when revved it will still pass.:angel_not:

Sorry to hear about your problems.

It's then I read about the problems of diesel powered Jags I realise how reliable the petrol engines are and how good lpg is to matching mpg figures of diesels.

Hi Simon,

The diesel engine can be much maligned, but preventative maintenance is a must for diesel engines which many drivers do not do.  And when you buy a second hand car  ---   as many owners do --- you do not know what the previous owner has done.

The diesel engine is a very sturdy one, and if looked after will last longer than the average petrol engine, and it is only the emissions issue that seems to be the problem. By emissions, I mean that the many things that Governments have done and are doing to reduce emissions.

Using good quality fuel, and good quality engine Oil with regular checks of things like air filters will make the car run without too many issues.

Regards,

Peter.
