Hi All

I have 2006 stype 2.7 diesel 840000 on the clock

i have searched but cannot find anything on this

I need to replace the drivers side rhs (UK) egr valve p0402 its faulty was sticking so cleaned it in situ and the MAS sensor but still 'restricted performance' , however during the couple of weeks when trhe weather was below or close to freezing it was fine.

managed to remove the egr outlet pipe.

I've unplugged the old one  and tried the replacement ( placed it on the side ) and there is no restricted performance indication & running the engine it actuates then on shutdown it runs through its little cycle before it closes, as soon as I plus it back into the old one restricted performance comes up.

now i have looked at the manual but it is quite devoid of 'how to'

is the removal done from above the engine bay ? or do you have to remove the inner wheel arches ? or below the car ?

the bolts are almost impossible to get to the 3 off (8mm) that secure the egr valve body to the block ( as the suspension turret is in the way),let alone the egr inlet pipe bolts at the back of the block/head

has anyone actually removed and replaced the egr on their s type ? could someone please give me some 'how to ' tips from first hand experience ie how to over come the 2 small metal pipes that run along side it plus the large pipes behind the deadening material

Hi Colin,

I sometimes have problems with the egr valves [the OBD Scanner gives  Code P0402] which is an indication that the valves are sticking shut.

Wynns EGR Diesel cleaner - a can costs less than a Tenner  - usually cures it when a good blast on the motorway doesn't.

I had a look at cleaning the EGR valve, but being as I don't get oily hands any more, I opted for the easy option.  Trust me, it works.

Peter.

As Peter says? Try using a fuel additive in each tank full of diesel. I use Millers diesel ecomax. Also it may be worth changing where you purchase the fuel from? Super market prices look attractive but usually contain a high bio content (By law it should be listed on the pump) It also may be worth renewing the fuel filter and changing the engine Oil and filter in case the EGR problem has allowed diesel to contaminate it. Finally you could try disconnecting the battery for 15 mins and ground the car to earth which might reset the ECU.

Hi old growler

thanks for the info I only use shell, esso or bp fuel

i have noticed the Oil level seems to have risen slightly.

the valve does move freely & returns when manually moved with a screw driver but prior to cleaning it was sticking open, my thought was that the egr sticks open and the electro  part has some kind od coil within it that is activated by the ecu & possibly the 'coil' has failled as I am not sure how to see if it opens and closes. that frustrating  thing was that after cleaning i left the car idling for 20-25 mins and no 'RP' however as soon as i moved 10feet to drive off 'RP' came on.

Oil & filter change will be done in the next week only done 6000miles since change but will do it again.

also i'll do the additive ...i did read somewhere that people were adding 2 stroke to their fuel mainly Discov  owners.

Still would like details from someone who has replaced their egr ....whats the view on blanking  by the eay

Thanks Colin

I don't think yo can just blank them?

But you can have a remap and egr delete , which turns out more beneficial ,eg better performance and forget EGRs forever?

Correct, Stan.

I checked out blanking the EGR valves last year, and found out that they could only be partially blanked.

Rather than doing that I preferred to regularly clean them using either a good blast on the A38 or Wynns EGR Cleaner.

I think it could be the electrical sensor that activates the valves could be at fault in Colin's case.

hi old peter

well i've used redex additive in the fuel, now i've used an egr cleaner jml...first blast with the air intake  as directed...air pipe back and gave it a run...'rp' light.

got back and repeated the process...put the air pipe back on fired up 'rp'... shut it down removed the air pipe revved it up no 'rp'

i did notice a smattering of Oil cpmming out of the 'warm' recirculated air pipe..put it back  took it for a run after about 1 mile 'rp'...

on the way back ( stopped off for a couple hours) drove home no 'rp'...

my vin s 10 digit is 6 which I thought was ok for egr blanking as i thought this is the same engine in the disco 3 ..

colin

well all seemed 'rp' free last night on a 10 mile round trip

this morning about 5 miles into  my journey 'rp'

all the way to ipswich ...

then on the way home no 'rp' !!!!!

any sugggestions as tif its worth getting the code cleared as so far its cost me £60 in code reads....

can anyone give me some pointers on replacing an egr valve on the right hand side uk drivers side as the tech manual assumes that there is around 2 feet of space around the engine bay !!!!
