As an S-Type owner, you'll be aware (I guess) of how sensitive the electronics is to low battery voltage. You'll maybe not know though, what you're expected to do after dis-connecting and re-connecting the battery.

I've put together a PDF document which takes you through the procedure step by step. Nothing that isn't readily available elsewhere but just gathered together and (in my view) logically ordered into a single reference.

It also includes how to get the audio system working when you don't have the security code :yahoo:

I've been asked for it so many times that I though I'd make a thread just for access to that document so here it is:-

Battery problems again,my fault as I have not had time to even run the car for the last couple of weeks ,I checked the battery voltage and was surprised to find a reading of 11.6 volts ,over 14 with the engine running ,I would not have called 11 volts low but apparently it is.

I have now reset almost everything ,tried to put the wrong code into the radio ,it now says please wait,I will try that again in the morning. So I have to do the initialising run, anyone know how pedantic the steps are? I have little chance of doing 30mph for three minutes on a Friday morning, the same goes for 40 or 50,and the M5 is a couple of miles away before I have any chance of hitting these speeds.

Hi Mike,

Taking the car on a run to ensure battery charge is effected should not be a problem, and the steps you have detailed are ideals rather than necessities.   I Iive in a busy conurbation and do a lot of shorter runs so I do need to keep that battery well charged.  I have a little C Tek "traffic Light" which will go from red to amber on a 3 mile drive. While a longer run is needed, I just drive and find that about 30 miles will see my battery fully charged no matter what speed I do. I do put by battery on charge about every two weeks if I have not done a longer run.

Regards,

Peter.

OK thanks,I thought that would be the case , to charge I have to run a cable across the footpath ,so not ideal

I have replaced my battery a few times over the years and was unaware that this procedure was required. I reset my radio stations and that was all. May I ask if this procedure is dependent on a specific year S-type? Or possibly models with view screens? My Jag is a 2003 S-type 4.2L.

hi

it does not need doing if your not bothered about one touch on the windows

apart from the clock which will need doing and also reset the epb.

cheers

Hi all, just been reading through this thread and it seems as if it might have the answer to at least one of my questions. Just picked up a 1999 S-Type 3.0 SE and the one-touch only works on the drivers window going down, no one-touch closing.

Seeing a couple of comments, it appears to be correct for early S-Types? If so, is it possible to retro-fit the later Door Module to gain one-touch on all windows?

My other questions will need to go in different threads as although still electrical, they aren't related to windows.

Thanks in advance

Hi Dave

no later module wont work on earlier cars, there two completely different cars electrically

cheers

Thanks Joe, i had a feeling that might be the case but thought i would ask. Along similar lines, the module that actually does the hard work for the AC of switching the heater valve, the one above the glovebox (can't think of the name just now), i'm guessing that's not interchangeable between early and late cars either?

No prizes for guessing, the AC only blows hot or hotter, depending on temperature selected! The dealer fitted a new heater control valve but that hasn't fixed it. On a very steep learning curve at the moment! 😉 😄

Dave, "Steep learning curve" ......... you will get plenty of them with the trials and tribulations of an S-Type. Buy yourself a Code Reader, as they should give you a clue what is going on.

hi

its more of a common problem on post 2002 cars, pre 2002 car were not as bad, climate module on later cars blow circuit board tracks inside the module and usually quite visable so easy to repair

if you need any wiring diagrams or manuals have a look here http://www.jagrepair.com/

Thanks John - any recommendations on the code reader? I have a generic OBD-II code reader but having looked through some of the diagrams, it doesn't seem to be possible to use on the the S-Type.

Other than that, my old beastie had code readers built in to the ECU and/or would flash warning lights once a link had been connected in the right place and the other beast i regularly use doesn't have fault code memory so no codes stored. The multimeter is useful on that one! 😛

Thanks Joe, i've found the link for jagrepair already but thanks for confirming it's a good one!

Looking at the diagrams, only other thing is can see is F14 (10A) as being a possible cause of the heater valves not closing but that also appears to feed the SRS  circuit and i've not noticed the SRS light on at all - even when just at position 2 without starting. I'll have to be more observant next time i start it!

I know this is and old thread but I hope someone can still answer my query. Does my year 2000 S Type have any form of PATS or immobiliser ? I ask because my car will not start - all the electrics work but the starter does not function - not even a click of the solenoid. The car was left unused for several weeks and the battery discharged itself and I have been advised this could have caused an immobiliser e to function.

If so how do I reset it???

Thanks

Steve

Prime suspect with these symptoms is the key itself - if you have a spare key, try that before anything else. There is an RF-ID chip inside the key, these can fail at any given moment in time with no warning. If they do, the car will not turn over.

Also try locking/unlocking several times in a row with the remote fob.
