A varied selection I know but want a new toy before summer I have had a few 911s and Boxsters some American stuff and last year a V8 vantage which was a stunning , special car but servicing horrendous So want something different These are cars I like for various reasons XKR bonkers rapid, sounds amazing (but  slightly dated interior ) XJR amazing interior love it would even consider a 3.0d remapped still under 6 sec 0-60 ( but its has too many doors  ) Evora S bonkers fun sublime steering/ handlings feels rapid ( but build quality and hassle getting in and out might get irritating ) and last the Maserati a very beautiful car , having the italian experience ( a little down on power and expensive servicing )

Opinions invited please especially you guys that have tried the other cars compared to the Jag .???

Hi Carl,

Well, I can see your dilemma, it's like choosing between your children ! Lol, not a bad one amongst them. Cut me in half and you will see Jaguar like a stick of rock, but you have thrown a curve ball in the shape of the Maserati, so, my preference as follows:

1. Maserati  2. XJ supersport  3. XKR  4. Evora,

They are all good cars (not so sure about the Evora) but I would go for the Maserati purely on rarety factor and they are stunning to look at. You haven't put the F Type V8 on your list, now if that was there, I would be going for that, it's rare, stunning to look at, beautifully put together and sounds like a thunderstorm on a bad day.

Good luck

Funny you should say that I had a test drive in an F type last week but the base V6 Supercharged , but even that a little out of my budget , Very similar in character to the Aston Not as Sharp as a 911 or Evora but a bit more focused than a XK or Maserati, beautiful car though and sounds good for a V6 . I tried to remember how it made me feel driving an XKR in comparison I did not get that wow sensation that the noise and theatre that a 500bhp 5.0V8 XKR gave me but over time I might appreciate it more ,  the cabin was a nicer place to be and it looks great !, It is still in the back of mind  :-) but £35k was really my max budget so dangerously close .....

Hi Carl,

Good selection but I looked at it from a slightly different point of view - would I swop my 5.0 V8 XKR for any of the models you suggest.

The simple answer is ..... no. The Evora is a sports car not a GT. Reliability & maintenance costs would rule it and the Maserati out for me. I agree completely that the XJ interior is something really special and whilst its beautiful on the inside its not quite so pretty on the outside - and that is where the XKR comes in - its beautiful form all angles, my indie keeps it going at minimal costs and it the soundtrack it plays matches anything available at the same price  ........... oh yeah, its quite quick too ...........

.............. tough choice.

Good answer , although I have been googling reviews on F Types again today .... all the reviews praise it and state how it makes the XK seem so old fashioned and past its best , I do not remember them as outdated but was a couple of years ago I drove one , maybe I need another try :-)

Once again - the F type is a sports car ..........  the XKR is a GT .........  similar in comparing an Aston Martin Vantage to a DB9. It depends what you really want. The F type will be sharper than the XKR for sure but i know which one I'd take on a long drive.

The F type will most certainly make the XKR feel dated ...........  all the developments from the XKR were included in the F type form the start .......... but as value for money, you're going to go a long way to find something to match the XKR let alone surpass it.

Being a 4.2 V8 XKR owner and having driven my Brothers brand new 5ltr F-Type RS the honest answer is if you can possibly afford the F type then there is no question. I cannot at present however, I am more than seriously considering the 3ltr version which is within my price range and still goes well and gives a lovely note. The crowd had the 3ltr version prior to his F-Type and loved it, he only upgraded because he is stinking rich and thought what the hell. He did offer me his 3ltr at a good price but it was not my choice of colour

It would definately be the V6 if i did ,there wws one for sale last week for £36k but sold straight away have seen a couple of higher milage ones at £38k and 10k mile ones at £40k , but i guess as summer gets closer the price will rise slightly :-(

If you're going for the F type --- better wait for a V8. When I bought my first XK, I spent most of my time wishing I'd gone for an XKR.

Talking away from Jaguar going back some year when I had an SLK32 AMG that had a supercharged V6 that produced 347bhp in 2001. I know things have progressed a little with 450 and 500bhp but there was not wrong with that light motor a little 3.2 which kept the Boxters at bay. a V6 is fine with high cc
