Hi everyone,

to start with, my engine has one head gasket blown and it's pushing coolant out, misfiring, white fumes out of the exhaust etc. Before starting to spend money on my old engine I am starting to think about buying a used engine directly from the UK, as there are only one or two XJR's for spares in my country. My question is, what is the price of a naked 4.0 v8 engine from 00-02 XJR would be reasonable? My car production date is August year 2000, guess it's AJ27S. Thank you in advance

Hi Vaidas.I personally think you would be jumping out of the frying pan and straight into the fire! Looking to import a used AJ27S engine that would be at least 14 years old with unknown history? That you can't inspect in person and see / hear running. I would remove the heads on your engine 1st and check what's the cause of the water loss problem? If is from a Nicasil liner then the engines scrap! (if it has steel liners there should? be a tag on the rear of the engine block) Plus this engine went through a series of timing chain tensioner upgrades and the only way to tell is to remove cam covers to check it has the metal bodied tensioner as the plastic ones fail. Same with water pumps the vanes need to be metal and not plastic! These 2 items are not cheap parts to replace.

Thanks for reply, I am planning to buy a new timing set with metal tensioners, new pump, thermostat, coolant lines under the charger and other bits which are recommended to do while engine removed. Mine gasket got blown due to water pump failure, guess it's one of the most common reasons. My mate in the UK found one for 900 quid, but thats a complete engine.
P.S. my engine is with steel liners, as far as I know if the last six characters begin with an F the car was fitted with steel liners.

So, took the head off and as expected found blown gasket. Ordered tensioners, gaskets, filters and few other bits from the UK, will take the head to specialists tomorrow to check for any damage and skim if necessary. Engine liners and pistons looking good. Having in mind that the water pump looks undamaged and has no damage on the he inside, I think it has to be stuck thermostat which lead to overheating.
