Who's got a DPF then?

If I ever upgrade to a younger more powerful 2.2 I feel the need to avoid the dreaded DPF.

Some say … that there is no X-type diesel with a DPF!  But trusty (?) Wikipedia says that the 2008-09 2.2 145bhp model has one.  Also, HonestJohn refers to late 59-reg models having one and apparently a DPF is standard on facelift 2.2 automatics.  It is also suggested that a DPF was a ‘rarely selected option’, even on the 2.0D.

So is this rogue DPF fitted engine still the Ford Duratorq ZSD (EU4) or is it another unit?

Who can admit to owning one of these models?  And is the DPF a problem?

I'd like to hear feedback about peoples experience with DPFs, positive and negative, as mine is all negative.

its just a bit of info really

if your thinking of taking one off, then it would have to be put back on for MOT's which means ecu remap

so if people are thinking of buying a car and the DPF is missing, it could be quite expensive, MOT time

at lot of company's were offering cheap remaps, with DPF removal, this could now backfire on you MOT time

its worth checking the DPF is still on when buying a diesel car

Hi Rowley,

Joe has given you some very good information.  There had been some garages advertising DPF removal and as the MOT test is visual [at the moment] they are encouraging  drivers to have the DPF removed and the "box" in which it fits welded back to fool the MOT tester.

My neighbour has had this done to his Mazda 6  and it has got through the MOT, but he now realises that the EU might well  decide that the MOT test should be more than visual  --  cost to refit an new DPF could be very expensive.

I have not had a problem with mine even though I do mostly short runs -- but give it a good run at least once a month.

Hi Rowley,

I don't have a diesel x-type but my previous two cars were a Mini Cooper D and an Alfa Romeo Mito 1.6JTDM. The mini didn't suffer any DPF issues but the Alfa's DPF light used to come on regularly. The advice given to me by an Alfa specialist when the light came on was to, "drive like an angry Italian!"

I was talking to the guys at Jag Auto's in Liverpool last week and in passing they said that they recommend all diesel owners take a ten minute motorway trip in 4th gear every 4 or 5 weeks to clean the filter out.

Hi Rowley,

I have a 2008 diesel auto facelift model 2.2 litre. Now done 95000 miles. no problems with the DPF and just beem MOT`d.

I do drive fairly long fast open country routes most of the time, but if I feel I have been doing quite a bit of town driving, I put it in manual mode and take it for a blast.

All very illegal for road use   Like Peter says the DPF is only a visual check for MOT and Jaguars diesels will pass the current emission test with the soot filter removed unless the engine is well worn and smoking when held at revs. If the box is neatly cut open with a plasma cutter and the guts removed then a plate welded back and rub some grease over so it burns and stains the heat shield above hides from further visual investigation. The DPF from the ECU will need to be removed also. If its worth going to all that trouble to just save approximately £360 an aftermarket DPF costs is up to the individual? Only benefit nice exhaust roar + 10bhp gain

Please see below extract from owners manual. DPF is standard on Facelift 2.2 Auto and optional on the 2.2 manual

If you have the DPF you will see it under the car behind the flexi pipe on the centre section of the exhaust. The catalytic converter is attached to the exhaust manifold on the back of the engine so cannot be confused. The engines are the same with and without DPF, standard 2/2.2Ltr Ford Duratorq.

Hi Steve, I have the same model. Now done 145k. Due for mot next week so hoping all will be ok. Not had a problem up till now but I always use premium fuel and additive.

I have a 2.2 auto 2008 facelift model with a DPF until now no problems with it and I do lots of short journeys but always use premium fuel and millers additive periodically, also give it a good blast in manual for about 20 miles a couple of times a month .

Reply to joe on dpf and mot it is not illegal to remove a dpf and you do not need one for an mot. But it is illegal!!! To drive a vehicle which was manufactured with one from new,on a public road. So if you bought a vehicle where it had been removed prior to your purchase you would be driving illegaly as soon as you drove off, and at a fine of between £1000-£2000 a time probably not wort it. Keith. Ps i just bought a brand new pdf for my V6 3.lt xf for £360 had been qouted up to £1100 just have to be patient in your search and be prepared to negotiate.
