Hi everyone. Just a quick one.

My dad has a Jaguar S Type R and i must say his power steering is like a feather. You could drive with one finger all day, but when i get into my diesel X Type there is a considerable difference. It feels considerably heavier. I have changed the fluid and it made a small difference but still nothing like the S Type.

Dont get me wrong i have power steering and it is not heavy in any manor or making any noises. I just noticed how much lighter it is on the S Type and i am envious haha. Is this just the quality of the setup on the X Type or will i be looking at a new pump later down the line?

Hi John,

Quite a simple answer, as an S type Owner, with a son who has an X type diesel.

First, the x type diesel is a front wheel drive car, with a smaller engine than the S Type, and the front wheels drive the car as well as steer the car

The s type is a rear wheel drive car with a much bigger and heavier engine sitting at the front, and does not have to cope wth drive as well as steering.

I find the difference when I drive my son's car.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi

I would say the S-type R has a much better power steering setup

as the front wheels/tyres on the S-type R are huge, so power steering will be more powerfull

you could check a few things, tyre pressure's are corrects, this can make a big difference, certain tyre's will make a noticeable difference

and also get someone to turn the steering side to side and look inside the wheel arch towards the top of the strut, it should turn smoothly, if it notchy or the spring jumps/clunk the top strut bearing could be seized, this a common problem on cars that have stood some time

cheers

Hi Joe. Yeah i done all the checks . tyres are good and no noises or anything from strut etc. As i said there is no signs for me to think my steering is not functioning correctly but i do not know anybody else with an X Type to see if the steering is different so i resorted to speaking to other owners on here. I now know that it is just how it is. S Type upgrade here i come haha.

Hi John,

not driven an Stype so can't compare, however, I've had a front drive Xtype sport and now got an 2.5v6 AWD, the one thing I can say is that the Sport did suffer from a bit of torque steer at times and was heavier than the 2.5 which feels very balanced and planted, it is a joy in the bends :w00t:

Thanks everyone.

I have accepted that if i want feather like power steering then i must buy a S Type haha. The X Type was my first Jag and i must say it is a good place to start but it really hooks you and makes you want to upgrade to the next model. My dad has had Jaguars all his life; XJ's, XJS's, XK's and now the S Type R so i have grown up in Jaguars. Guess its now part of my blood xD!

Hi John,

My first Jaguar was an X type 2.5 AWD and it was a great car.  I really wanted an S Type when my old Rover Sterling was getting tatty, but when we saw the X type SWMBO like it so much we caught it and no regrets.

When it was stolen, SWMBO said we should turn a disaster into an opportunity, and needing a car quickly I did an intensive search, and found one within out budget in Dumfries at Stratstone Jaguar, who said they would bring it down for me to look at. But within an hour Stratstone Solihull rang and said that had one there - just 18 miles away. We saw it and bought it. Nearly three years later and hardly a problem Great Car.  With SWMBO in Galway looking out over the Bay.

Haha excellent Peter!

Sounds like it was just meant to be doesn't it. Yeah I really do love my X Type but its just not quite the full Jaguar feel. The S Type seems to be a popular choice and if you find the right one they do look stunning.

Beautiful location by the way and your S Type is a great example.

And that picture was taken the day after a trip on a P&O freighter's deck and a 140 miles drive across Ireland!  And with the wind blowing a lot!
