Another S-Type gearbox fault query

Hi

2001 S-Type, 3-litre automatic, 76,000 miles

I'm hoping someone can shed light (offer a solution!) to my gearbox problem. The 'gearbox fault' warning is intermittent and only manifests itself on motorway driving, not around town.

I can go for miles at a steady 70 but when I slow down or stop, say to exit the motorway, the warning comes on and the gears won't drop down any further than third or fourth gear until I pull over and switch off the engine, which 'resets' the gearbox. I've had the sump/filter and a solenoid replaced about 1500 miles ago, and this seemed to improve matters, but just recently the warning has appeared again.

I'm wondering why the gearbox resets, and works normally, after I switch off the engine for a few seconds - is it an electrical, hydraulic or mechanical problem?

I'm tempted to get my local indie to swap out the gearbox for a reconditioned one at £1500, but if there's a simpler (cheaper) solution I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Hi Mark, and Welcome to the Club.

I assume you have had the Oil changed when you had the other gearbox work done ---  it is supposed to be set for life but many owners have it replaced at around 70k miles.

The other thing I would try is to use the manual operation of the gears using the left side of the "J" gate  by starting off in 1st gear and working up through the gears and then vice versa.  That might give you a clue as to whether it is mechanical, electrical or hydraulic.

The engine warning light coming on and going off suggests something quite minor --  but it still needs checking out.  Your local indie will probably do it for you, unless you know someone with an OBD2 code scanner.  Jaguar charge about £70 to plug you into diagnostics  ----   my mechanic either does it for nothing, unless it is a complicated set of codes it needs to read.

Thanks for the ideas chaps - I may go for buying an OBDII reader (britishdiagnostics.co.uk) as the last time the codes were read there were two differing opinions on how to remedy them; the first was "don't chase the faults, just change the gearbox", and the second was to have the solenoid/oil/filter/sump change ("this will fix it"), both from different people in the same workshop.. Needless to say I opted for the latter in the hope of saving a few quid.

I'll try the manual gear change method in the meantime.

Hi Everyone new to the club but this thread has been useful as I now have the exact same problem with my 2001 y reg s type which I bought only two weeks ago, it's covered 87'000 miles but identical issue.  I have a Obd2 reader but it won't read my car any suggestions on this would be useful thanks in advance

The british diagnostics mongoose lead i can recommend, it can read every module on the car for fault codes, reset them and for about £70 of eBay from british diagnostics, is well worth it

but you have to be carefull as you can damage things as well, but if you use just  to read and clear faults its great, it also gives you a fault code, possible reasons and how to remedy

generic OBD readers generally only read engine fault codes, not many will read more than engine and gearbox.

you need to know the fault code, before any idea of fixing it, something as simple a intermittent fault on a sensor could throw up a fault on the box and engine

The Mongoose has two versions in the same package - one for pre-2005 cars and one for 2005-onwards. The latter provides the 'possible remedy' capability, whereas the former doesn't. I'll be buying one anyway, despite mine being a pre-2005 car.

Hi Mark

I had a very similar problem on my X350 and when I read the codes ( ICarsoft code reader ) it came up with Low Battery Voltage to Gearbox. I was advised on the forum to check the electrical plug  on the gearbox for Oil contamination. Apparently they are supposed to be changed when you change the Oil, I think you need access to the inside of the gearbox to change the socket but not sure about that. Anyway I didn't see any Oil contamination but I gave it all a clean up and touch wood it hasn't come back. I wonder if a failing battery might cause the fault as well.

I have a mongoose cable and IDS is for pre 2005 and SDD for post 2005 cars

And IDS does show faults, possible reasons and remedy's for the fault

If your thinks of buying a mongoose cable if your car is pre 2005 then you want versions V130 or V131 later version dont allways support pre 2005 cars

and the cause of the dreaded lurch, is usually software issue related to the auto box, latest updates cures this and a local jaguar indy near me charges £80 for the software update and adaptions reset

but one thing to remember is that mongoose can do some serious damage if just used for faults codes and clearing them its fine, but if your thinking of updating software as in auto box software and you get it wrong, then you can brick the auto box ecu, or any ecu that you trying to update,

Thanks for your feedback. I ordered the software & cable from British Diagnostics on 25th March but have yet to receive it, so I can't tell you what I've found yet (I've given them 7 days more to fulfill the order, but I'm getting worried that I'll never see it)

I had the intermittent problem on my XJ8 308. First week went into limp home mode. Trac not available, gearbox fault etc. Stopped and restarted and fault gone for a month then it returned. after that 6,000 miles of trouble free motoring until about 4 weeks ago it happened a couple of times in quick succession and then just before the Brighton trip it happened 4 times in quick succession. I had to pull out of the meeting and informed Steve. The common denominator seemed to be at the point I lifted off suddenly when driving at or near the NSL

So, into my trusty independent Jaguar guru and he said it isn't a gearbox fault. it is a succession of fault readouts and they found the sensor in the Throttle Body faulty and replaced it. The performance of the car has certainly improved immensely. Was a bit slow on the uptake unless the accelerator was pressed to the floor or lower gears selected. Now it's as responsive as a young cub.

That's interesting.. I eventually bought a DTC reader and got P0795 (had to look it up on here, relates to a transmission solenoid issue) plus P1586 ('Throttle Control Unit Throttle Position Malfunction').

I wonder if the P1586 is the real problem?

I have a 2006 s type sport when I put into drive or reverse it seems to bang/clunk into gear also have gearbox fault abs/dsc fault. jaguar h a fox preston say they don't repair gearbox just replace any help welcome

I would be inclined to have a look on the internet for transmission specialists in your area.  There are a few up and down the country and you might be lucky in getting one near you.  It is a specialist service, and I guess a recondition gearbox in exchange fr your could be relatively cheaper.

i have a 2006 s type v6 diesel 91000mls have gearbox problem. when I put into drive or revers it seems to bang/jolt into gear also have abs/dsc/gearbox fault. has anyone had this type of gearbox rebuilt and what was the cost any help welcome

ive got it booked in Monday ive heard on forums a new box 4000pound recon 3000 my cars only woth 4500pounds

I had the gearbox malfunction come only a couple of times but now I get 'grinding' noise, it almost feels like a 'cog' is sticking & the cruise is trying to kick in ! Only using to local as not confident to go further. Anyone else experienced this ?
