Potentially new owner

Good afternoon jag owners ,

I have owned many many cars and recently fell down with a Volvo S60 which needed a new auto box so I cut my losses and sold for 800 which was a 1000 loss but gear box was a 2000 bill, any way the time is to choose a new motor that I can keep and not change after 6 months , I have max 1000 to spend but would like to spend 800 tbh , 

im thinking either a 2.5 awd x type 

or

2.0d 

id like some advise on which is best , I don't do loads of miles about 150 a week or so , 

had a few let downs on td cars tho with injectors and glow plugs alike so maybe looking at a good old petrol , I just don't know so I'm asking for some advise please

Hi Richard, and welcome to the Club.

My son has an x type 2.0 Diesel --  good car, good engine but he does a lot of miles so a diesel suits him.

I had an x type 2.5 AWD SE and I found it a great car and it would probably suit you down to the ground.  Not as economic as the diesel, of course, but on a long run you will get over 30 mpg, and around town about 25mpg.  That will probably suit you better.

Hi Richard,

Far be it for me to contradict Old Peter but for what it’s worth, unless I’ve misunderstood you completely and assuming that the figures you’re quoting are good old British pounds sterling, I think you will be hard pushed to get an honest X type for three figures that hasn’t got or had significant issues, even one with high mileage, especially if you’re looking forward to a minimum of 6 months trouble free motoring.

Of course I wish you well, but I think you’ve set yourself a very tricky task.

I've been looking round on e bay and found a few 2.0 d x types with 100000+ and I know they might have a couple of issues or niggles sorting , looking at a nise 55 plate done 121000 full leather nise gray colour in Manchester at motormainier in Manchester , I've bought low mileage 3 year old cars in past that have also had loads of problems and niggles so I just look at the main things like will it go over speed bumps without rattling like hell , as where I live it's speed bump city lol

Hi Rich,

I've owned a 2.0d Sport estate and now have a 2.5 auto SE saloon, both very good cars, but for me,  the 2.5 is a much better car, I just love the gutsy V6 which is smooth as silk, the car has a lot of extras which also adds to the appeal. I do around 100 miles a week in her and not bothered about economy hence why I went for a petrol.

A friend of mine sold his 02 2.1V6 SE back in Feb for £700 with 120k, it had a few slight cosmetic marks but everything worked, no warning lights, straight body and a full history. There are cars out there sub 1k but as Rowley says, you might struggle to find a car in the short term that is totally problem free.

Hi I'm currently looking at a 2.0 d x type but occasionally the glow plug light flashes then goes into limp mode , turn it off and back on and it's ok again ? Any ideas or should I stay away

Hi Richard,

Glow plugs can be expensive to replace.  I would be inclined to walk away unless the person you are buying it from agrees to pay for any costs.

When the car goes into limp mode it is generally to protect the engine.

50.00 for Bosch plugs , on eBay , not bad really , but would that cause car to go into limp mode as I thought after plugs had been used if at all then they don't work after car been started

The glow plugs in our cars are progressive Richard, this means that they may well be in use after the car has started, depending upon what the engine management system decides would be best.

hi richard.. i own a 2.0d on a  54 plate, if you do consider on a x type diesel make sure there is no rattle from the daul mass flywheel,( makes a loud thumping noise) also on the test drive press every button going and see if they work ? service history, + stamps. no steering wobble, brake judder when pressing brake pedal, if a noise comes from the left side of the engine it my be crankshaft wheel damper or pulley tensioner, check all sills as the x type does suffer with this problem of rust so be warned to check on this. best return of miles per gallon on mine is 49mpg.  also the drivers seat wears bad in the bottom corner with wear and tear. any more info i will try and help.( but i do love my car :-)

Hi again Richard,

Unless the car is being given away I'm not sure that it's sensible to buy one with an obvious problem, especially if the cause is not apparent, could be costly.  My advice would be to stick to a reputable Dealer so that if there are problems you can ask for them to be fixed before you buy the car, and have said problems noted and warranted.
