Buying a Jaguar

This is a good website and I am glad to have found it.I have owned an X Type 2.2 diesel for two months now and I am absolutely delighted with the car and so far no problems.

However if I had found this site before I bought the car I might not have bought a Jaguar.For every post from members lauding their purchase there seems to be about ten from guys who have run into seriously expensive problems.I did not realise that Jaguars were so unreliable

Well said Jim. Walt, most of the time it’s not the cars that are unreliable, it’s the owners! Perhaps I jest, but as Jim suggests, a Forum such as this is mainly for finding like minded people to help with correcting issues rather than praising the car’s obvious virtues.

It goes without saying that the Jaguar is a magnificent car (providing it's well looked after) ... and so say all of us!

Thank you for your replies , I cannot argue with the points you make it's only that I doubt my ability to carry out some of the more complicated procedures described here and I am concerned about large garage bills.

As I have said it's a really interesting site and I can learn from it

Walt,

With any car come garage bills. The trick with any vehicle is buying well, with sound & reliable service history, and then looking after the car as best you can. If, like me, you have no flair for car DIY then best to find a reliable and trustworthy Independent mechanic to look after you, whatever car you’ve got, then hopefully those big bills will stay away.

I have another thread about Main Dealer Servicing, to which many good people have contributed interesting and valid comments, and I am now convinced that Main Dealer Servicing for any 10+ old car simply doesn’t make financial sense. The one big caveat is that your Indy needs to be reliable, qualified and trustworthy so as not to rob you blind, like the Main Dealers have a tendency to do.

Hi Walter

I understand your concerns, However as you know, Bills come hand in hand with being a car owner, it doesn't matter what badge is on the car. I believe parts are generally quite reasonable, you're level of DIY skills or lack of, is where costs could be reduced, if you can't do the work then unfortunately you have to pay someone to do it for you.

The guys have mentioned finding a good Indy mechanic, totally agree, I used a main dealer straight after I bought her for peace of mind, with a health check, and some work that required immediate attention, I wanted some other bits doing and the main dealer quoted numbers that made my eyes water, it was finding this forum that opened my eyes to other options and ultimately cost savings.

Also I would imagine you would find a similar range of problems being discussed on other forums of other brands of car, so don't be overly concerned about the Jaguar brand.

I'm a newbie to Jaguar ownership, and have already paid out money on her, but as the advert says 'She's worth it' I've got her to a place now where I'm happy, it's just about keeping her there, as the guy's say.

it's a pleasure to look at her, admire her, and an honour to own and drive a Marque, not just any Marque, it's a Jaguar!

OK I give in the advice given is welcome and sound.My main point was that aspiring Jaguar owners might have second thoughts on reading of the problems that can happen.My only thought at the moment is to come up with a foolproof way of protecting the beautiful cream leather back seat from the attentions of a boisterous boxer !Removed!.

Hello Walter,

pics below and link to the back seat protector I use, keeps our Spaniel/Retriever nice and cosy plus does a great job of protecting the seat. I took the added precaution of using a thick fleecy blanket (Dunelm) underneath the cover as it is a generic type rather than custom fit. The blanket tucks in around the seat and the cover sits over the top, The colour suits the interior well.

Hi Walter,

Just a comment. I have driven for about 60 years and a varied number of makes of car, many of them brand new. I have had one Ford Escort Mk 1 where all the electric failed the day after I got it - Brand New! I had another Ford that filled up with water every time it rained and another that cut out on hills.

I had a Rover 4i8 which blew the Oil pump when only a month old, and a Rover Sterling 825 [ cost £27k top of the range car] which needed a new steering rack when only 10 months old.. It also needed a new radiator when 3 years old.

I had an Austin A40 with a whine from the differential, a 3 year old Austin 1100 which blew its head gasket, and a mini that needed a new engine.

I also had a Dawes racing bicycle with which I never had a problem.

I have had two Jaguars, one an X type, and my current S type, and I have never had a problem with either.

So, for me, it is either a Jaguar or a bicycle.

Hi Ive just joined the jag owners club, im on my second Xtype the first i bought brand new 2002 2.5AWD loved it although wouldnt go past a petrol station, Unfortunatly it went with the ex house and shirt of my back! Ive now got a 2007 2lt diesel and love it going up north last year with five adults on board it retuned just shy of 50mpg .

I agree with other comments about giving the xtype fair chance because they are a great car. However if you do sell it and manage to find a second hand car that is without any faults and totally reliable can you let me know what you buy! Other than that, keep it quite because if you do find such a car and the word gets out , car sales of all other cars will stop, garages up and down the country will close as they will no longer be needed and we will all be driving the same boring car

Hi Paul, and welcome to the club.

I agree --- the x type is a very good car, and Jaguars, like every car sometimes have an issue that needs attention. For every poster who asks about an issue, there must be a couple of hundred who have never had a problem with their car.

We do have many members who don't mention that their cars are working perfectly, in the same way as many people don't say that they live fillet steak, but who will complain when they get a tough one.

So for the record, I have an S Type diesel. I have never had a problem with the DPF. I get over 30 mpg around the city and just under 50 mpg on long runs. I have not found any rust on my car and all the electrics work!
