S Type Fuel Starvation

I have a problem with my '54 plate, 2.7D S Type. It seems to be fuel starvation. The pump is dated 2010, so has already been replaced (maybe a recurrent problem). There is power to the pump, but it is not priming or supplying fuel through to the filter, which is dryer than it should be. I have tried a replacement pump, which I must assume is o.k., but the problem is the same. Any help on this would be appreciated. N.B. I have a nearly -new battery, which I charged up to the gunwales, so it's not that!!

I have been thinking about this for an hour or so, but not being an expert in either mechanics or electrics an answer is hard to come by.

But having the same model of car as yourself and noting what you have already done I can only suggest something what I would do.

I read an article in a magazine [online] that while diesel engines are designed to run on 95 degree octane, that they do run better on the higher octane fuel - I use Shell V Power.  I have also come across issues concerning injectors.

Last Friday the mechanic who has serviced my cars for years recommended an additive called Diesel Magic which cleans the injectors, and could be a cheap fix at around £7.  Wynns also produce a similar product.

I also had my car Terracleaned which also cleans out the fuel system, which would cost about £125.

It could be worth trying.

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the advice. I usually use Shell Nitro, too. I was wondering if a simple blockage was the fault, as, when I swapped the pumps over I did notice some detritus in the bottom of both. A clean through is the next move, I guess!!

Hi Christopher, 

If any car runs even a short distance with little fuel in it, there is a danger of mucky bits in the tank getting though.

It was an easy job to blow through the fuel pipes --  great on motor cycles  -- at onetime, but now a bit more difficult.
