Hello All

I have never owned a Jaguar before and at present have an extremely fast  remapped saab 9-3 Aero. Although I love my Saab , I find the ride very hard and i am no spring chicken anymore.  I used to own a Rover 75 2.5 V6 with all the toys and absolutely enjoyed driving home from work wafting down the local roads in silence and comfort.

Within the next three months I will be able to afford to buy an S-type, I am looking at getting a diesel made in  2006 or 2007.. I would like the SE or XS models, my list of 'must haves'  will limit my choice , sat nav, xenon lights , heated seats, front park(not so important).

What should I be looking out for?

Thanks

Hello Gary and welcome,

I bought my son a 9-3 TTid4 last year, a great car and as you say "rapid"

I've got an Xtype 2.5 so not much use as far as Stype advice is concerned, however there are a great bunch of lads on here that can gen you up on advice for the car you are looking for.

Hope you get the right motor and happy hunting.

Regards

Andrew

Hi Gary and welcome to the club.

I've had my 2.7 se for about 18 months now and it's never let me down.

Having said that it's had a new battery and heater control valve.

Your Must haves shouldn't be a problem mines got parking sensors front and back , heated seats , fold back mirrors, cruise control, memory seats and steering wheel. The foot peddles also can be electronicly adjusted.

Things to look out for are ,

Sills corroded, water in boot ( that's where the battery is ) Cambelt replaced if over 105,000 miles, smooth gear changes if auto, heater working as it should and check on the government mot history Web site to make sure there are no nasty surprises waiting to appear.

If you choose to purchase the car you won't look back because they are a pleasure to drive and you will go everywhere with a smile on your face.

Gary.

The mot check thing is very good you can see how they have been over the years, thanks for that info . Sounds like there not too much to go wrong. I tend to over maintain my cars anyway. I think this will be the right desicision hopefully.

Hi Gary E,

I have a S Type 2.7D SE, will quite a few factory fitted optional extras, which I have had for nearly three years without any major problems.

I use premium Fuel  which I find gives me both good fuel economy and performance, and in spite of doing mostly short runs, I have never had a DPF problem.

The only time the engine working amber light come on is when the EGR valves get sticky and Code P0402 pops up  ---  a good  blast or a can of Wynns EGR Cleaner cures that.

Great Cars!

Regards,

Peter.

Welcome to the Jaguar Owners Club Gary

I too have a diesel S-Type, 2006 vintage. It had a fair amount of goodies when I bought it but this car is very amenable to retro-fits for those items you may not have originally.

The sills do need looking at, preferably removing the covers to see the full extent, if any, of corrosion. Sill corrosion is the killer on the S-Type.

The brake servo is also a source of problems. Test driving the car, keep applying brakes and attempt to exhaust the vacuum. If the brake pedal goes hard then there is a faulty servo or vacuum pump. Most likely the servo as brake fluid can escape and ruin the vacuum chamber.

Don't expect the performance of your Saab but for a diesel, it goes quite well nonetheless.

All the way along Gary.

The plastic covers are very close fitting and you won't see much apart from if they are going at the seam. Once you've had the covers off you can assess the situation and take action. If they aren't bad, a little preventative treatment and say, annual inspection will keep them in good condition.

Thanks, i see what you mean, just being looking at a few on here, seems easy to inspect and maintain,  There are some bad ones pictured on here though, !!!

Can anyone tell me what the difference between the sport and SE is besides looks?

Hi Gary,

Quite a lot of difference. I had an SE and my son has a Sport.

My SE has full leather seats, his has partial leather, for example, which are the standard for each specification.

The SE specifications also depends on what the first owner has opted for, but if you measure it in money probably about £3k.

Peter.

The older Sports look a lot more contemporary, with less chrome, but your vintage is post facelift which I have less experience with. I understand suspension settings are different, but mine is comfy and sure footed, not overly harsh. The interior wood I have was only specified in the Sport and my Sport has full leather. Others will know more...

jag blue.jpgjag red.jpgWell I have made my decision , just need to wait for my money to come through now although I have found two ideal candidates, with everything i need. One in dark blue 07 plate  se model and a very nice red se on a 57 plate, both diesel autos, I am favouring the blue one.

Why does it take so long to process your money when taking out of long term savings !!!

As in the words of my granddaughter I need it now, !!

Hi Gary,

I endorse your choice  --  I had an x type in Radiance red, which suited the X type, and I now have an s type in Indigo blue which I think suits the s type better.

Banks are very quick to process your money in but very slow to letting you get it back.

Regards,

Peter.

door rubber is split so that should be done before i pick it up, plus 12 months mot. I have it booked in to have cambelts done on 6th June, knocked a bit of price for it. It has full Jaguar service history, and seems in good nick. Hopefully will be a good buy

As you say, it clearly has memory seats Gary. Does that extend to the steering column / pedals / mirrors?

Further, have you checked whether it has powerfold mirrors?

didn't check about powerfolds forgot about that one, pedals are fixed. spec from topix

I found they varied in price tremendously, this one was up for £5495, but got extra on my trade in to what I was expecting slightly above price to pay for the cambelts.  I was happy at this as the history was good, all jaguar except the last one, good warranty and seems in excellent condition with decent matching uniroyal rainsports all round(time will tell).

I found one at £4000 but no warranty, and was a bit rough, seen some at £6000 which were good but spec low. Prices out there seem to make no sense as there are good bargains to really over priced ones.

I know, I paid 4.5k for my diesel manual se 18 months ago!

the prices then were all over the place., rougher cars with poor spec going for 1 to 2k more.

I found out not long after purchasing it that it had two new turbos fitted at a dealer!!

They wouldn't tell me the invoice price though.

my local indie did my cam belt for £360 inc vat, check with dealers though because they do deals/fixed price offers.

Dont worry about the "back belt" as these never go and, apart from running the diesel pump don't cause problems if they do.

also, the water pump is run by the aux belt so doesn't need changing with the cam belt.
