Hi

Recently purchased a 2009 X Type love the car and love how it drives, only one niggle following a long journey on the motorway there seems to be a humming / whining noise from the rear, only really noticeable at around 60-70 mph. Any ideas.

Welcome to the Club, Keith.

I am a bit pragmatic about curious noises if the car is driving well.  I had an A40 that had a whine from the differential of 40k but it went very well and could even get up to 65 mph with a following wind.

I would not be too worried, and eventually you will find the solution.

Regards,

Peter.

Check the tyres, if they are worn they can sometimes cause noise. I had this on a Rover 75 the tyres were close to the limit and were like a fifty p piece!

Hi Many thanks I recently had a service at main dealer who commented about the rear tyres looks like I should get them replaced. Do you still think Pirellis are best for the the car.

My S type has Pirelli P Zero's all round which I find very good, in the past on my Rover I had Goodyear efficient grips which I liked very much and will buy when required for the S type. They're not the cheapest tyres to buy, but I firmly believe in buying a known good brand as I often have my grandchildren in the car.

Hi Keith,

I'm with David, certainly smacks of tyres if you're only getting noise at speed.  With which then follows your purchasing dilemma.  There's an up-and-coming market in tyres emanating from the strangest places.  Of course the evergreen providers such as Goodyear, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Continental are all up there but I'd be inclined to research some mid-cost tyres where you can save many pounds and still get very similar (and safe) results.  I have a favourite independent tyre fitter who recommended NanKang (Taiwan), they're not budget tyres but honest to goodness middle price boots.  Ultimately of course it's down to how you drive!

Best, Rowley

Hi Peter

It was when i had the Auto Gearbox fluid changed and when Mackie's took the car for a test drive they said there was a noise at the rear and could be a bearing or tyres, I thought it couldn't be a bearing as the Car had only done just over 20,000 miles so about 6 months after this i had the car fully loaded with 5 people on board going to a wedding and noticed that the noise had disappeared so that decided me to renew the tyres and find the Goodyear handle really well.

Regards Tom

Hi Tom,

I used to have a Rover Sterling - great car - which suddenly developed a curious noise.  The tyres looked OK and the steering was still firm.  But running my hand round the inner edge of the nearside front tyre I found a bulge, possibly caused by a pothole.  Two new front tyres and the nose had gone

Regards,

Peter.

Many thanks to everyone who replied to my topic. Looks like I will be buying Goodyear.
