Hello XF owners.

 I am about to buy an XF and much thought and would like to know what to look out for. I am going for the V6 diesel and hopefully if I can find one the 275 BHP model.

The year will be preferably a 2012 plate as that's about in my price range.Are these economical models? 

Your thoughts please gents.

Welcome to the Club, James.

XF owners will be able to assist you with their experiences of the XF  and the engines that power this car.

I have the S Type with the 2.7 diesel [208 bhp] and find it quite economical.  This engine went into the first XF's and were uprated the 3.0 litre diesel to meet EU5 emissions regulations.  The S type is a heavier car than the XF but still returns about 45 mpg on a long run and about 30 mpg around the city.

Of course, a lot depends on the way you drive and the weight in the car, but the XF should get no worse than that.

Picked up my 3.0 v6 Diesel S Portfolio (2014) on Sunday. Extremely please with it.

My journey to/from work is a rough 50/50 mix of motorway and city driving. I've had 42 one way and 38mpg the other (where traffic is much worse). Also put my foot down from time to time during the journey. 

You wont be dissapointed

Thats exactly what i have. I get low to mid 30's doing mostly short journeys but on a motorway i easily add 10 MPG to that. I purchased the 275 "S" as I'm not to fussed about MPG.

Its quick and if you press the right buttons, very responsive. It handles extremely well but the large wheels make the ride a little harsh but not enough to be uncomfortable. 

I like its looks and appreciate its a real jag not a rebadged Ford. The only downside is the slowish response when first started, the show off air vents and gear selector is wow initially but soon wears off, it can take 5 seconds or more for the rear camera to come on, not a train smash but is a little irritating. The satnav is adequate and, if you go the official route, horrendously expensive to update. Some of the plastics are not up to Audi or Merc standard. Thats about it for cons the pros far out weigh them. Its a car that feels special and with the more powerful engine is a lot of fun.

Hi Phil,

There are many people a touch jealous about Jaguar drivers.  When Jaguar was owned by Ford, that company was one of the world leaders in automotive technology, and much technology coming out of Detroit was adopted by other car manufacturers.

No one says that Rolls Royce is a rebadged Buick, although Rolls Royce and Bentley used a Buick engine until BMW and VW took them over.  Aston Martin, Morgan, Mazda also used Ford engines, and why not? They are good engines!

I love my s type the engine of which was designed as a joint venture between Ford and Peugeot, ask used in other cars too.

Couldn't agree more. I think Ford make a wonderful range of good value cars, from Escorts to Mustangs. Personally i don't think theres an ugly one in the range. The R&D money poured into JLR undoubtedly prevented the brands disappearing.    

I feel like i may have touched a nerve and i don't know why or which one. I never intended to so sorry if i said something to offend. Comparing a Buick to a Rolls Royce is a little odd? Maybe its the old X-type is a Mondeo with wood complaint? The Mondeo had a splendid chassis and was a logical, cost effective choice on which to base the new, at the time, baby Jag. A pity it wasn't the success they needed it to be.

I enjoy my Jaaaag and if some are a touch jealous then fine, I don't get it, i'll just say more fool them, but when JLR do something i do or don't like i'll say so.

Hi Phil.

My comment reference RR and Buick was basically intended to show that those who called the X type a Mondeo never called the RR a Buick although there were just as much Buick in an RR as there was Ford in an X Type.

The very first X Type - there were very few made and I think less sold was actually a Mondeo Ghia with a Jaguar badge on it, but the Halewood workers wanted to build a Jaguar designed by Jaguar Designers, and when Ford agreed they found that they had a winner in the X type.

Interesting historical interpretation. GM/Buick did supply a V8 engine to RR motors. They never supplied a chassis or built cars for them so no wonder no one would ever describe a Buick as a Rolls Royce. On the other hand the new "baby" Jag conceived under Ford ownership was based on an existing platform, namely the Mondeo (Ford CD132 platform) Land Rover used it on the Freelander. I didn't know Ford rebadged a Mondeo Ghia as a Jaguar, was that for the US market? 

I'm not trying to denigrate the Xtype but the fact is it was based upon a Modeo chassis and thats no bad thing at all. The problem was they didn't stop there they also raided the parts bin using much of same switch gear. Potential jag owners didn't like that so the car ended up being far from a winner you suggest, the fact is it never sold in anything like the numbers Ford needed. Ford needed to sell 50,000 a year but, although it was Jaguars most successful car, it actually sold half that. Consequently Jaguar and Land Rover where sold as a unit to TATA when finances got a bit tight in-spite of the huge sums pumped into JLR.

I remember the X-type launch, it was supposed to be an affordable and economic Jag. Initially you could only buy it as a gas guzzling V6 petrol with four wheel drive. It missed the intended economy conscious market by quite some way. 

Enjoy the car just for its, and your, own sake. Just don't reinterpret history to justify an opinion. You say the "Halewood workers wanted to build a Jag designed by Jaguar" Do you honestly think Ford gave a stuff what the workers wanted in a small plant in NW England. Ian Callum said that the X-Type “was essentially designed in Detroit and presented as close as a fait accompli to reluctant designers and engineers at Jaguar's Whitley design centre.

Hi Phil,

The first "x type" was a hasty experiment at the end of 1999 and some dozen or so were put into showrooms in both the USA and the UK.  It totally failed to attract any attention, and my uncle, who was an engineer at Halewood told me that only a handful were sold and the remainder were rebadged again as Mondeos.  One such sits outside in front of the house next door.

The x type was designed by  Geoff Lawson and Wayne Burgess, with a target of 100,000 a year, actually, and in its year of launch manufactured 55,600, with following years 69,050, 61,600, 60,000 and then 42,975 and tailing off.  The AWD sold well in the north of the USA and in Canada, with the S type selling quite well in the Southern states of the USA.  The S Type was designed in Detroit with Ian Callum co-operating.

I am from the North West of England and knew many of the 4000 Halewood workers who were , in later years, quite happy with the way Ford consulted with them.

Well it looks like jaguar still haven't got it right , i read somewhere about Dr Spieth ripping the X Type apart . But i don't see him commenting on the New XE, as i am led to believe that when both cars were launched they sold more X Type,s than XE' s.

The X type sold 55,600 in its first year and 69,050 in it's second.

Pretty good for a luxury car.

Hi I must agree that Fords do make a nice car and the current model line up in my opinion is possibly the best they have had for a while now. 

 

As as for the fuel consumption, my 3.0d s gives me a return of 39.4 overall. My model is a my12 facelift xf s.
