steve, not sure if the layout is the same on the 2.7 but you can sure get the idea of how it connects from this pic, this is for the 2.0 and 2.2d   i did mine which taken about a day? pics of mine in my profile if you need to see.  its not a hard job to do if youve got the tools.

Hi David,

appreciate the pic. Looking at it the layout is very similair with the other end going into the air box. I'm sure it's easy...it's certainly a job I've done before but each car has its own issues and slightly different techniques. There are loads of videos on the web but not for the s type.

will probably give it a try during the week unless I'm told otherwise by others on the forum. As they say...if you don't ask...you don't find out...you don't learn!

take care and thanks again

Hi Paul,

good to hear from you.

That would be perfect......guessing you know where to find one? Appreciate pointing to it if it's possible.

Hi Steve/David,

I have had several occasions when the engine warning light comes on and plugged in the OBD2 scanner and found P0402  -  excess exhaust gas - indicating the EGR valves [there are two] are sticky and not opening properly.  The valves are located at either side of the V6 engine

I have seen videos about their removal for cleaning, which led me to buy a can of Wynns  EGR cleaner, which actually does work.

Apparently the EGR removal process is quite tricky and certainly a bit mucky.  You can see both valves quite easily, but with my Cost Accountant's mind in action,  about 15 minutes with a can of EGR cleaner [about £10] comes out cheaper than 3 hours minimum at £20 an hour with the same result.

My mechanic who I have used for 14 years also feels that if you can clean the valves without removing them you should follow that route.

Regards,

Peter.

In fact, I was hoping you'd produce one Steve

Paul,

new you'd get me....if I had one mate I'd share it with pleasure. You know it's often best to ask people as there is a wealth of experience on the forum.

its not a job I relish doing....always wary that an issue may cause a problem.

peters logic is good....so that may be an option if he will tell me how he did it. Rest assured if I do tackle the job I will take some snaps and do a write up so I can share the experience.

Peter,

daft question......how did you do it? I know the egr cleaner is an option worth looking at... But I guess there's a knack to it to maximise the cleaners use...and I'm guessing the spray was useful resolving the problem?

would appreciate a pointer

Hi Steve,

It is very easy.  I use Wynns EGR Cleaner - Halfords.

First you have to get the car up to normal operating temperature.  Then take out the air filter which s easy enough.

Get the engine running and keep the revs at 1round 1200 rpm.  My grandson, who is 9 assisted me with that.  You can use a brick and a piece of wood.

Prop up the air filter cover  and doing you best to hold the can upright, and using the little extension tube, start giving short squirts from the can into the air intake.

If the engine increases its revs, don't worry, as that shows that the cleaner is starting to work. Carry on until the can is empty.

Replace the air filter, and then take the car for a short run.

Job done!

Wynns also have an injector cleaner and a DPF cleaner, which also are good additives.

Peter.

Hi Pete,

lovely.....sounds simple enough. Can't borrow a 9 year old so will use the stick method!

will update when done. Appreciate the simple instruction...thanks.

Peter,

was starting the operation when spotted an issue. The lid won't come off the box in situe....you have to disconnect all ancillary bits just to take the box out , to remove the filter , and when you put it back in....the lid will not lift to get access!

anyone know how this is done?

to remove the whole system....to ultimately not have access to spray seems odd..but if I don't ask...I don't learn....

Hi Steve,

It just clicks open, although others have found it quite stiff.

These Photos might assist.

Peter.

Peter,

thats great....but please don't shout. Managed to get it by undoing the securing bolt and wiggling things a little.

Done as instructed and all back and clean. Not sure if it's my head playing tricks but took it for a drive and seems more responsive and smoother to drive. Will nip out again later and see if it's the same. If my mind isn't playing tricks on me.....what a difference cleaning the system has made. If it's right...I will log this on my regular schedule to keep it tip top on performance and running.

thanks to all for assistance...it's always good to know we can all look after each other.

Whichever way is a good way it lets you do the job, Steve.

It does make a difference, though and well worth doing now and then.

I've used that Wynn's stuff as well and it certainly seemed worth the effort Steve.

I still intend to take them apart and clean them properly (as it were) so will watch your experieinces with interest.

Just taken it out again paul,

its not in my head.....it is definitely better in every way. The acceleration is now back , it feels more responsive on the throttle and it seems smoother. I was sure the problem was the egr valve as I had a similair issue on my old diesel range rover and I must admit the drive now bears out my initial conclusion.

must admit I'm glad I didn't have to strip it down....this is a much better way to solve the problem and I will definitely pencil this on the maintainance schedule to be done regularly to keep the engine running as it should. All in all very pleased at the outcome......thanks to all for the interest and input.

I know this is an older topic, but I now seem to get the same P0404 with my Jaguar S-type 2.7 2008.
I want to try to spray the EGR Cleaner, but where exectly...?
Is it the square whole under the air filter, as shows on the last photo above?
