Hi all,

I am a new S-Type owner a 1999 3.0 V6 in Silver. After looking through the discussion about them being an old mans car I may be the youngest owner on here at 24. I have always loves Jaguars since my Dad and Grandad had them when I was younger and have looked for one for ages.

I have a couple of questions though, I will start with what is hopefully an easy one. My model doesn't have the 6 disk multi changer but has the button on the head unit for it can I just buy one from a newer model and plug and play or is it not that easy?

Secondly the harder question. The car is cutting out on idle, this only tend to be on longer trips or when I am stuck in traffic which made me consider over heating? It happens in park and drive and starts straight away afterwards but will just cut out at random when stationary. The temperature gauge doesn't show it as getting hot though? Anyone came across this before? Any advice?

Many Thanks and Hello

Chris

Welcome Young 'un

the cd changer in your car will be in the glovebox if fitted, the newer one won't fit,

it will have the ford radio fitted so getting a changer unit shouldn't be a problem, search the bay for them.

As as for cutting out, has it been serviced properly?

the plugs on the left bank are a right pita as the inlet manifold has to be removed!

it could be something as simple as needing plugs

Welcome to the Cat Side Chris....wow....24 and an owner of a SType! Great stuff!

Enjoy and good luck.

Service it...at a reputable dealer.

For or parts try Kent Jaguar....I just found these guys and they seem pretty good. I have a visor and a mirror on order with them.

Hi Both,

Thanks for the reply

This is the head unit I have but no CD multichanger, can I just fit a second hand one into the glove box? And will it be a straight forward plug and play?

With regards to the idle problem after doing some googling it appears to be a vacuum leak in the elbow at the back centre of the engine. When I was looking I noticed a hissing and by squeezing this connector the hissing stopped. How ever I removed the pipe and elbow that runs under the manifold and when blowing through them both there was no obvious air leak, any one know where this goes below that elbow joint?

With regard to servicing my brother is a mechanic and was going to get him to do it but his jaguar experience is limited would you recommend the extra money to go to a specialist?

Thanks

Chris

Welcome to the club, Chris.

The s type is a great car and I think you will enjoy it.  And it is not an old man's car, although this old man has got one.

The Club has a 17 year old XJ owner, though, and he thinks the same!

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Chris mate,

I picked mine up last week and I'm 23!

The autochanger for mine is in the boot, under a flap on the left hand side.

Welcome Chris. I can't help much with your technical problems but Jags seem to run in family lines.  My son's Jag is almost identical to mine, same model, year, colour and nearly the same mileage (70kish). Only difference is that mine has the touch screen satnav (ha!) and his has the door protector strips (grrr!).

As Chris said, the CDC autochanger is in the boot on the left hand side, I have the same head unit and a CDC in the boot, mine didn't come with the cartridge for the CD's, which is annoying! I've also been looking at fitting a more modern double DIN head unit in mine, but finding a CDC cassette would be a good start!

Relating to the rough idling, if you've just bought the car and don't have clear evidence of servicing, you need to do a full service on it now with Oil, filters, plugs and probably coil packs (as Andy said). Learn to do this yourself and you'll save a fortune! Ask Berkshire Jag for a service kit which is what I did, your local autofactor can provide the Oil...
