Going to view an S-Type

Well managed to go and see my first one today,  this one:

it was close, or so we thought.  Anyway it drove a treat, very quite, very smooth.  Looked great, but there were a few too many dinks scrapes and evidence of corrosion for me..  Had to laugh though, pressed the memory button on the drivers seat and ended up pinned on the steering wheel.  My wife was having hysterics, it was like the scene from the film Christine where the garage owner gets crushed by the car.  Thankfully inbetween the laughter she got hold of the handbook and managed to find the seat adjusting instructions so I managed to get back to a safer position.

Nice car, but I would probably have to spend a bit to get it to how I would want it.  At least I know what they are like.

Hi Gary,

The more you look at the more idea you have about the general condition and what you get for the money.

Only strange thing about the car you went to view is that it has the 16" Helios alloys, the single most hated alloy wheel in Jaguar world !

(with the possible exception of the 'Flute' alloys on the original XK8, which are so hideous that the mechanics have to approach them using a mirror to avoid being turned to stone !)

What is weird, is that they were never fitted to the SE model, previous owner probably picked them up cheap with decent tyres ?

Eventually got to see the V8.  Well apart from the badly worn drivers bolster, split H/B gaiter, non-working A/C, dent O/S rear wheel arch, the engine seemed nowhere near as responsive as the V6 I tried a couple of weeks ago.  It was very lumpy on idle too.  A very bad sign for the 4.0 I believe?

It is as they say good to try a few beforehand.

The fact that it is still for sale says something about either the price, condition or both !

Sounds like about £2k tops to me !

I would not pay anywhere near the price of a 4.2 for a 4.0 myself, as I have mentioned previously.

The 3.0 V6 is a good engine, once again I would always go for the 2002 facelift cars with the 6 speed auto and electronic parking brake.

Sounds awful for the money they were asking Gary, I'd expect much more! Good advice from Jon there, my AJ6 runs sweetly and is a fantastic engine, lighter than the V8. I'd keep looking 😉

It was a bit of a jaunt to go and see it and to be honest if we had not gone so far I wouldn't have even bothered to have a drive it was that bad.  He fired it up and you could tell it wasn't right as the idle was very lumpy.  Certainly not as smooth as the V6 I tried.  I have another one lined up to see shortly, private as well with an immaculate MOT file.  Thanks for the links and the advice.

 

Here's a curve ball!  On the way back a Crossfire went past us, showed one to my minder they look different she said; quirky?  She quite liked the look of it.......

That could also be the name of a Japanese car.

The Japanese did have to change the name of one of their cars for France as it sounded less than good  Toyota MR 2 which sounded like Merde.

Nope.

Mitsubishi says "Starion" is a contraction of "Star of Orion" — and refers to both a star and the mythical horse, Arion.

Apparently the name for Lexus was devised from the title of the topic for a meeting in the Toyota HQ in Japan.

It said that there  would be a committee formed to fix the name of a new product and the Committee would have to decide what a Luxury Export to the United States should be called.

After three days the most junior member of the team who was scribbling on his note pad said the name was already in the title of the committee  --
