Cheap, high mileage S-Type R, should I ?

Chance of a cheap S-Type R with 155k on the clock.

It has dealer and independent history but involves a long trip to view (and collect ?)

Am I absolutely barking mad ?

How owe cheap is cheap and how far away is it?

 

if it's a private sale I personally wouldn't touch it but if it was from a trader I'd probably give it some thought.

remember there the top jaguar and usually have top bills accordingly.

If its cheap, then its usually cheap for a reason

what year is it

make sure you check all the obvious, do you know the reg no, do a mot history check to see what advisories its has

check sills and take it for a test drive

Hi Jon,

The big quandary is it with spending the cost of a trip, but then you might kick yourself if it is a good one.

If you know someone in the motor trade near where it is i might be worth getting it checked out before you make the journey.

Go for it!  No your not mad!

If it is a 02/03 car just make sure there is no rust on the rear arches as most R do! and the only way to know for sure is to go and view!

for me that's big mileage! Personally I wouldn't consider a car with that much on the clock, I always try to keep south of the 100k mark if possible. As tempting as it may be, You may well be inviting problems, as the guys have said you don't mention the cost or her age

The car is a 2006 '56' plate, less than half the price of a similar car with 80k on the clock.

Just being moved on cheap as a dealer part exchange, we do the same thing with anything older or higher mileage than we will retail.

Unfortunately it is 200 miles away from me but very tempted to make the trip, all I have to lose is the cost of fuel !

Sounds too good to miss, go for it!

But being a 56 plate it's has not been dropped from it's road tax bracket so it's £500 a year!

You can't win, get something newer so hopefully some of the bugs ironed out and it virtually doubles the tax !

I know what you mean. 2 years ago I brought a Hyundai coupe 2.7 V6 for the wife, it was a 06 plate. I understand that 06 plates had the lower tax and 56 plates had the higher tax, it was only then I got the car home I found the cut off point was March 23st and the wife's new car was new on 25th!

2 days over the cut off date is annoying !

I went to view it today, 10 hour round trip thanks to the useless UK road network, unable to cope with moderate traffic volumes.

Cosmetically very good for the age and mileage, needs two back tyres soon.

Seemed decent to drive but had engine management light on and fault codes p0031 and p0131 which relate to bank 1 oxygen sensor.

It was not as quick as I remembered but might be due to the fault codes ? (or the fact that the last time I drove one for any length of time was in 2003 !)

A lot of car for the money but still undecided !

well if you say "its not as quick as i remembered" , then there's definately something wrong with it

its should pull like a train and mine supprises me every time use it.

both of the codes are the same lambda sensor 1 bank 1 HO2S, could be just the sensor, or could be the cat, I've seen these unplugged or a wire cut, so people think its a easy fix, then when you replace it the fault shifts, to cats.

do you the reg no, did you check mot history, still sounds not too bad,

but I'd of thought with it been a garage for the sake of the cost of one lambda, they would of replaced it, so to ask more money for it.

Still for the money it's still worth it if it needs a new cat or 02 sensor. I take it it's the black (car) one?

Yeah it's the black one !

I have committed to buy it for a bit less than the asking price.

Money where my mouth is time, soon find out whether it is a bargain or not........................................

 

Once I get it home and replace the air/ fuel sensor we shall see where we go from there.

 

Think it might need the heater valve as seemed to blow cool air whatever the setting ?

Worst case scenario, I can probably break it for a significant chunk of what I am paying for it.

Interestingly, for all S-Type R price watchers, the Glasses Guide price (trade) is less than £2k !

Not that you are likely to buy one anywhere as cheap as that !

It was quick but my Impreza is quite rapid and I drive some of the quick stuff at work so maybe I have become de-sensitised to speed ? (LOL)

The chap selling it is totally honest about what he does, he has about 50 cars in a yard that he buys 'as is' from other dealers, some have cosmetic issues, higher mileage or older than the dealers will retail.

Just adds a bit of profit and moves them on as 'trade' sales, no time to fix problems on individual cars, what you see is what you get.

I suppose you pay your money and take your chances ?

If the cars sound and mechanically sweet, then it may be worth a dabble

especially if your going to do the work your self, just remember at this mileage it may want a few service items in the future

like the coolant hose in the valley, if it not been done, then its due, gearbox service oils/filters/sleeve, check the the brakes, later type brakes are more troublesome.

later R's also have variable timing, produces no extra power, solely for emissions, but if it don't work, you actually lose power.

with this mileage it may also want some bushes

and dont forget to check them sills, most important

if you do the work yourself, then it can be a bargain, but if it has to go the garage every time, if might be worth buying a sorted one, cheaper in the long run

I will talk nicely to our Jaguar master tech (or I can take it back to my previous dealership) for advice and work at 'mates rates'

Once the car is mine I will speak to the previous owners and servicing dealers to see if I can find out what has already been done.

Has to be worth a shot at the price I have paid for it (I hope !)

My wife does not fancy the 10 hour round trip to drop me off.

I could try a cheap flight from Manchester to Heathrow but if I add check in time, travel to Manchester airport and from Heathrow to the dealer (55 minutes), it could still be three hours plus ?

Thank you for the suggestions and your kind offer.

I can probably arrange for one of our delivery drivers from work to collect it and pay my employers for his time but really want to drive it back myself to get a feel for what needs sorting.

I would also feel awful if something happened to the car whilst our driver had it in his care (even if not his fault)

At the moment I am waiting for the funds I moved out of an ISA to appear in my account (I had 'zero' intention of buying another car) so cannot arrange things until I have a date.

Getting impatient now as I just want to get on with it !

I bought my car from London area

I used the train, if you go off peak times its a lot cheaper and I visited my local stoke station and ended up getting a deal, ended up a lot cheaper

its not the fastest, but its a day out and a small adventure

But what i can say, is the trip back in the STR was a absolute hoot, loved it
