Had this problem myself. Could be a sensor or the control unit. I had to replace the control unit which is situated in the left hand side of the boot. Not cheap I recall.

Hi David, 

Simon has pointed you in the right direction.  It is also worth cleaning the sensors - which is a cheap option and also looking at the connections.

I had this, turned out to be a fault sensor.

Turn your ignition on, put it in reverse and then put your ear to ear sensor. 

You should hear it ticking.

I have the same problem, when slelecting reverse it makes a beep noise, then the beep turns off.

 

Is it easy to replace the sensors?
