Hi all , i really can't remember if i've asked this question before , i can't find any trace of it on previous posts so here goes . The problem is my engine management light does not illuminate at all on my 3.0 X - Type not even when the ignition is turned on . When i bought the car i didn't notice until the next day and upon plugging a code reader in it was flagging codes relating to emissions and my mechanic noticed it had new lambda sensors recently put on but was still high on emissions . He quickly identified the problem and cleared the codes . I was wondering if the previous owner was having problems with the emissions and some how disabled the EML to mask the problem or there could be some other explanation . Any ideas ???

Regards ,

Andy .

Hi

This is a Dodgy dealer trick, pop the Bulb and hey presto no faults

But on the s-types its a led, not sure about the x-type, but its most probably the same

the led is easily removed also, the light should light up and then go out, same as with the others, like airbags, abs, these are also usually checked on a mot

you might have to remove the clock/dash to be sure

looking at dashes on eBay, there no bulbs at rear, so there led's and its just a few clips to them apart, so at a guess, they have popped the led off the board

cheers

Cheers Joe i'm thinking the same on the dodgy dealing side . Apparently the EML is not part of the mot according to my mechanic and it has had a mot with no mention of it . How difficult is it to remove the clocks just to have a check ? any ideas ?

hi

I dont think its too hard, remove the wood trim, and few screws and the clocks are out

just dont switch the ignition on without the clocks back in

eml is not a mot fail, but airbag one and abs one is, if they are not working

if yo look on youtube ther will be a clip of how to remove clocks

look here

Cheers Joe , just looked on youtube and yes looks straight forward . The abs and air bag lights are working its just the EML . If the led has been taken off i might just pop some new clocks in as they are fairly cheap on eBay

Hi

Unfortunately if there the sames as the s-type, its not that simple,

new clocks will need programing, to get them working and might even immobilize the car, as its part of the security system

it would be easier to repair

cheers

Before removing anything, you can do a Bulb test by holding in the trip button on the end of the left hand stalk and switching on the ignition (the position before engine start). This enters a dash self-test suite. Press the button repeatedly until you arrive at the Bulb test whereby all of the dash lamps are illumenated. When you are finished, just switch off the ignition and that's it. Good luck.

I dismantled the dash and took the clocks out ( very easy ) then started to try and get inside to see if there was anything obvious like a missing led or to see if it had been taped over . I got so far and couldn't get the dials to part with the backing . I used as much force as i dare then put it back together again , so i am still none the wiser . I will probably take the clocks back out in the summer and send it to a cluster repair specialist ,  seems to be a few on the net . I don't want to break it and end up buying new clocks and having them reprogrammed .

just a thought andy if you want to try,? get one from a scrap yard plug it in and see what it does. plus me being me i would also take it apart to see how its put together. hope you get it sorted out, best of luck  dave....

That would be a good idea David but i have read on a forum that if you plug a different unit in then plug your old one back in it won't work and will need reprogramming . I was hoping just to buy some different clocks from the scrapper until i found out they are all programmed to the individual car and will need re doing .
