On Friday evening I was involved in a road traffic collision. Luckily, the car suffered only minor damage which my mate Denis tells me will mostly t-cut / polish out.

What happened was that a clown decided that three lanes of traffic approaching a motorway roundabout were not sufficient so he tried to make his own in the process brushing against my car and then hitting another car as he cut across two lanes of traffic to make good his escape onto the M54.

I was so shocked and it all happened so fast that the only identification i could make was a silver hatchback on an 08 plate. I didn't even phone the Police because I had no evidence to provide them with.

However, this morning, I got a phone call from Midlands Central Traffic Police asking if I'd been in a RTC on Friday evening. Apparently, the idiot had hit a total of SEVEN cars and had been fully identified including registration number by four complainants and somebody had had the coolness of head to make a note of the registration numbers of the cars involved, hence my unexpected but welcome phone call this morning.

Asked if I would be prepared to be a witness, I said "Yes, of course" When the officer began to explain the procedure I said I was a Magistrate so knew about giving evidence, I heard the officer, although he'd covered the microphone with his hand, say "Got the !Removed!. One of the guys he hit is a local Beak".

Enquiries are ongoing but the Police are confident of making an arrest today :)

Good as far as it goes, and I suppose that the police would have known immediately if the car had been reported as stolen, but it would be surprising if someone was prepared to hit seven cars in their own vehicle. I suppose that if an old 08 hatchback was already battered they may not care.

It could just belong to a friend of the driver, and the owner may claim not to know who was driving it at the time.

Further information from Police today.

The individual has been charged with varied offences and released on bail until an initial Court hearing on 30th of this month.

I managed to glean that Friday's shenanigans took place whilst he was already on bail for similar offences.

He told Police it wasn't his doing but what actually happened was that six cars had decided to hit his car one after the other. The seventh car he hit apparently as a result of one of the other cars hitting him.

He took the case to trial which was yesterday.

Found guilty on all counts, he was sentenced to 12 months custody and disqualified from driving form five years and until an extended test is passed.

I hope so Peter, but these lunatics are by definition hardly good law abiding citizens, so often drive whilst disqualified.

Having observed this individual and based upon previous experience, a further disqualification will act as no deterrent at all. In fact, when this incident occurred, he was on bail for similar offences and was already disqualified.

Yesterday, I too a left turn out of our road. There was a car coming from my right well over 100 yards away, but the lunatic driving it suddenly accelerated very hard and attempted to overtake on a blind corner on a busy road.  i was driving at the legal speed of 30 mph.

Sadly this lunatic was driving a brand new Black F Type convertible.  There is a very expensive private estate nearby which a favourite place to live for professional footballers.

Peter.
