Hello all, I am a newbie and looking for some good old advice!

I have a 2003 3.0 S-type. I love it but it has an intermittent electric window issue.

Basically the symptoms are that occasionally the drivers window will not go up or down when I press the switch. The drivers switch bank will not operate any of the windows when it is 'playing up'. When I open and shut the door, it sometimes operates again but sometimes I have to lock and unlock the car to get the window to operate. Most of the time the window functions fine.

On the passenger side front, when the door is closed sometimes the window will not operate, open the door and 'hey-presto' it works again! Again, most of the time the window works fine!

so far, I have checked the fuses and all seems fine! Could it be the switches? If so how do I get them out? Do I need to remove the door card to achieve this? If so how do I go about achieving that?

I do not mind having a go at anything and I would appreciate any tips or advice from all of you as I really don't want to have to call out an auto electrician!

many thanks.

Hi

Sound like a common elecy window/central locking fault

At a guess the wires in the door shuts, have broken, open the the door and wriggle the wires gently, while pressing the window switch, if they start and stop working, odds are some have snapped

usually you can unclip the rubber protection boots to expose the wires, some may be visably snapped, if not if you pull on them, some will be stretchy/elastic and break

best way is to use wire crimps and crimp them, some people will strip, twist and solder them, which is a better repair/joint, but will leave the wire more prone to snapping, as the soldering leaves the copper cable slightly softer and will snap.

cheers

Joe
